Chatham Business Association: Parking Facility
Proposed for 79th & Rhodes

Project Number: 368
Report Date: June 1993
Author(s): Tingwei Zhang, Rong Zhang

The multi-story public parking garage proposed by the Chatham Business Association will be located on 79th Street and Rhodes Street (see attached map, page 8). The garage project has been anticipated by the Chatham community since 1981, when a study which focused on the 79th and Cottage Grove Street commercial strip was done by the Center for Urban Economic Development of University of Illinois at Chicago (UICUED). It is only now that a site for the proposed garage has become available. Buildings which were formerly located on the proposed site were torn down several years ago. Since then, the lot has remained vacant.

There are several reasons why the community needs the garage involving existing parking spaces, high volume of commercial truck loading and rush hour traffic. The proposed garage would help stimulate additional investment in the area. The revitalization of the commercial strip largely depends on a new parking garage. The construction of a garage will not only benefit the commercial strip, but the community as well.
