Chicago's Food Processing Industry: A Background Paper

Project Number: 304(2)
Report Date: April 1990
Author(s): Virginia Carlson

The following report provides background information on three components of the food processing industry for the Chicago area. This examination of the Food Processing Industry includes a look at SIC Codes 2010 (Meat Products), 2050 (Bakery Products) and 2060 (Sugar and Confectionery Products). The report is developed in four sections. The first section outlines the general industry statistics including employment trends, establishment trends and payroll. The second section estimates industry linkages using the Cook-County based Regional Economic Model from REMI, looking at the direct and indirect effects (not the induced effects) on other industries of a $10 million upswing in sales for our industries. What is most apparent is the linkages from Food Processing to the shipping and storage industries. The third section examines the occupational structure of the industry including occupational trends for the industry as a whole and by the different industries within the food processing industry. The final section is a concluding presentation that discusses some major issues that are relevant to the performance of the industry in the future.
