Welcome From the Director

Dear Prospective Student:

Valerie Werner, Director

I am Joe Hoereth, the Interim Director of the Urban and Public Affairs Program. I am so proud to be a part of the UPA program which in many ways embodies what UIC is all about - a practical approach to how cities and institutions work that is grounded in solid theory that values an understanding of the tradeoffs inherent in issues of efficiency, equity, and social justice.

Our practically-oriented Bachelor of Urban and Public Affairs (UPA) degree offers students a great start in the fields of urban planning, public administration and public policy, preparing them well for graduate school or the job market. Undergrads keen on continuing to graduate school may also be interested in our new "4+1" program, a joint degree program that allows students to take one additional year of coursework to simultaneously earn both the UPA Bachelors and either a Masters in Urban Planning and Policy (MUPP) or a Masters in Public Administration (MPA).

The broad appeal of UPA program is distinct, drawing in students interested in sociology, economics, law, social justice, advocacy, government, community development, urban planning, economic development, and environmental sustainability. Another strength of the program is the support available to students through our Program Coordinator, Danielle Cheatom, who advises students and handles administrative matters of the program out of the program office on the third floor of CUPPA Hall. I am also available to meet with students by appointment and Danielle can help you to set up an appointment with me. A truly exceptional feature of the program is its home in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs, along with six urban-focused research centers. I am also the director of one of those centers, the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement which allows me to connect UPA students with research projects, community engagements, IPCE programs, and public events.

Whether you are a potential new student to UIC, a current UIC student seeking a major that fits your interests, or a current UPA major, I invite you to peruse our website for a wealth of information. I think you will find that our degree programs other offer a unique balance of broad appeal and practical focus. Please stay in touch with us by connecting with the UPA Facebook page. Thanks for stopping by.
