UPP Next: A Professional Development Series

Dates/Times/Locations TBD

Confused about how to plan your Master's Project?

Do you have questions about what makes a good Master’s project or
thesis? Are you still trying to decide on a topic? For many, the entire
process can seem overwhelming. But it's important to get started
early--your Master's Project or thesis is an important way to
demonstrate professional competence to prospective employers. Janet
Smith will discuss choosing a topic and organizing your work. Recent
grads will give real-life examples of what to do and what not to do.
This event has been really popular in past years, and can help you get
started now--recommended for both first and second year students.

Is certification for you?

This presentation will help you understand the benefits of certification
for various career paths so that you can make an informed decision about
what professional credentials you might want to pursue, what is the
right time in your career to take credentialing exams, and how to
prepare. We are inviting the APA-IL state chapter Professional
Development Officer to discuss the AICP (American Institute of Certified
Planners) credential, and a representative from the Green Building
Council to discuss the various LEED programs, including the new LEED-ND (Neighborhood Development) program.

Mentoring: When, Who, How?

Mentoring relationships can play an important role both in your own
professional development and in building your networks. Representatives
from the CUPPA Alumni Mentoring Program and the APA-IL Mentoring
Program, as well as mentors/protégés will be on hand to discuss how both
parties benefit from the relationship. Learning about what to expect in
a mentoring relationship is crucial to choosing a mentor, so this event
is good for both students wanting a mentor now, or planning for a
mentoring relationship further along in their studies as a way to
transition into job search and early working years.

Informational Interviews: What can they do for you?

Most students have heard about informational interviews, but have little idea about how to conduct them, or even how to identify practitioners to interview and make the invitation. We will start with the basics, providing information and materials so students will be able to generate their own list and have some idea about what they can get from the process. We are also inviting a high-profile practitioner (one many students will want to learn about and from), for a demonstration of the interviewing techniques discussed. We'll follow with open Q&A for the guest interviewee.
