USAJOBS is the official job site of the US Federal Government. Users can search by federal agency, location, grade and job type.

National Council of Nonprofits
An advocacy group for nonprofits, the National Council of Nonprofits provides a national job board for its members.

Planetizen promotes awareness and issues of urban planning, in addition to a national job board listing service.

American Planning Association
The APA’s national job board can be found here.  The website also has useful information on salary and other career tips.

Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS)
The WTS works to advance equal opportunity for women in the transportation industry.  The jobs portal publicizes opportunities across the US and internationally.

Careers in Nonprofits
Careers in Nonprofits is a national job board.  Candidates will need to register, which is free, in order to view opportunities.
A job board website that specializes in GIS related employment opportunities nationwide.

National Trust for Historical Preservation
The National Trust for Historical Preservation is a nonprofit advocacy group for the promotion of historical places.  It provides a job board for opportunities across the country.

Job board for the Regional Planning Agency for Chicago’s 6 country region.

American Planning Association: Illinois Chapter (APA-IL)
Members of the American Planning Association’s chapter in the Chicago metro area can advertise employment and internship opportunities through the APA Chapter’s website.

Illinois Municipal League
The Illinois Municipal League is an organization to benefit municipalities and villages from across the state.  Its job board publishes opportunities for a wide range of municipal government roles.

Regional Transportation Authority

Illinois GIS Association
Provides links to municipal and county government employment postings for cities, villages and counties across the state of Illinois.
NPO is a job board that advertises nonprofit employment opportunities specifically for the Chicago metropolitan area.  Although it is free to use, job seekers must register.

Axelson Gateway
The Axelson Gateway, established by North Park University, is an online resource for the nonprofit community in the Chicagoland area, which provides a free job board.

Metropolitan Mayors Conference
A coalition of mayoral organizations in the Chicago region.  Employment and grant opportunities are advertised here.

Washington, DC

DC Planning Department and Other City Agencies
All employment opportunities for the local government of the District are advertised through the Department of Human Resources’ website.  Internships are also advertised here.

American Planning Association: National Capital Area Chapter
Members of the American Planning Association’s chapter in the DC metro area can advertise employment and internship opportunities through the APA Chapter’s website.

Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG)
COG is the Washington, DC regional planning agency that is involved in issues relating to transportation, the environment, housing, health & human services and homeland security/public safety.

The Hill: Classifieds

The Urban Institute
Based in Washington, DC, the Urban Institute is a research and policy organization dedicated to providing a better understanding of how public policy affects urban areas.  Most employment opportunities are located in DC, but there are occasional postings for other cities as well.

The University provides links to some of the top planning & urban policy organizations in the San Francisco Bay area.

American Planning Association: California Chapter
Members of the American Planning Association’s chapter in California can advertise employment and internship opportunities through the APA Chapter’s website.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District
The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District employs about 800 regular full-time, part-time, and temporary employees. Based in San Francisco, the District consists of three operating divisions (Bridge, Bus, and Ferry) and an administrative division.

SPUR (San Francisco Planning & Urban Research Association)
SPUR is a non-profit advocacy and research organization to promote urban issues in the San Francisco Bay area.  The “Postings” section includes events or recently published reports, but also includes jobs or internship opportunities.

The Bay Area LISC is an organization that works to support community development projects in San Francisco.

Metropolitan Transportation Commission
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.

The Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG)
ABAG is an association made up of cities and other local governments in the San Francisco Bay area.  Links to municipal employment opportunities are posted on the ABAG website.

ESRI, the developer of ArcGIS mapping software, conducts an internship program for a 12 week period over the summer months.  Most positions are located in Redlands, CA (just outside of Los Angeles), but there are some opportunities in one of its 18 regional offices across the country.
