Advanced Prosthodontics Course Descriptions

ANAT 544 Advanced Craniofacial Anatomy, 3 hrs.
Functional and clinical aspects of head and neck anatomy based on detailed laboratory dissection, original readings, and project work.

BSTT 400 Biostatistics I, 3 hrs.
Descriptive statistics, basic probability concepts, one- and two-sample statistical inference, analysis of variance, non-parametric methods, inference for categorical data, and simple linear regression. Introduction to a statistical computer package such as SAS.

ENDO 613 Drugs in Dentistry, 1 hr.
Detailed consideration of the need, use and prescription of drugs in dental practice. Drug interactions and modes of action of commonly prescribed and locally used therapeutic agents are stressed.

OSUR 612 Temporomandibular Disorders, 1 hr.
Detailed consideration of the diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment of a variety of temporomandibular disorders.

OMDS 501 Advanced Oral Pathology I, 2 hrs.
Detailed consideration of oro-facial cysts, odontogenic tumors, diseases of facial bones, salivary glands, and hematologic and lymphoreticular systems. Journal literature is included.

OMDS 502 Advanced Oral Pathology II, 2 hrs.
Detailed consideration of oral cancer and other lesions of oral mucosa, dental caries, inflammatory periodontal disease, skin lesions and microscopic diagnostic techniques. Journal literature is included.

OMDS 621 Advanced Oral Radiology I, 2 hrs.
Radiation physics, radiation safety, theory and techniques of production of intraoral and extraoral radiographs.

OMDS 622 Advanced Oral Radiology II, 2 hrs.
Interpretation of intraoral and extraoral radiographs.

OSCI 451 Research Methodology, 1 hr.
A lecture and seminar course designed to help the student understand and apply the process of scientific inquiry.

OSCI 452 Biologic Basis of Oral Diseases, 2 hrs.
A lecture course that focuses on the biological basis of oral disease and modern concepts in the biomedical sciences.

OSCI 580 Seminar in Oral Sciences I, 1 hr.
Faculty led presentation and discussion of original research followed by a question/answer/discussion session between faculty and students.

OSCI 581 Seminar in Oral Sciences II, 1 hr.
Student led presentation and discussion of original research followed by a question/answer/discussion session between faculty and students.

OSCI 598 Master's Thesis Research, 2 hrs.
Research experience is gained by focusing upon a research question and addressing the question utilizing an appropriate research protocol.

PEDD 621 Hospital Dentistry, 2 hrs.
Experience is gained in hospital protocol, medicine, anesthesia and the care of patients in the hospital setting during seminars and rounds.

PERI 612 Biochemistry of Periodontal Disease, 2 hrs.
A lecture and seminar course that deals with the biochemistry and immunology of the host system. Emphasis is placed on the role of these mechanisms in periodontal disease and the effect on periodontal structures.

PROS 504 Advanced Dental Materials, 3 hrs.
A seminar course designed to review the fundamentals of materials science, critically evaluate the literature and use analytical equipment to illustrate techniques of material evaluation.

PROS 517 Part 1-Advanced Occlusion, 1 hr.
A lecture and seminar discussion of the concepts of occlusion in the examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment prosthodontic patients.

PROS 517 Part 2-Advanced Temporomandibular Disorders, 1 hr.
A lecture and seminar discussion of examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment of patients with functional disturbances of the masticatory system.

PROS 610 Advanced Prosthodontic Clinics, I 16 hrs.
A clinical course designed to cover fundamental and advanced prosthodontic principles in patient care.

PROS 611 Advanced Fixed Prosthodontics and Laboratory, 18 hrs.
Technique A course designed to review the fundamentals of fixed prosthodontic restorative techniques in conjunction with laboratory exercises involving tooth preparation, waxing and fabrication of metal and ceramic restorations.

PROS 612 Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Seminars, 1 hr.
A seminar course devoted to the review of complex prosthodontic reconstruction therapy. Patients are presented for discussion by the faculty and students.

PROS 613 Multidisciplinary Seminars, 2 hrs.
A seminar course devoted to the discussion of dental therapy involving the disciplines of prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics and orthodontics. Patients are presented for discussion by the faculty and students.

PROS 614 Fixed Prosthodontics Literature Review, 5 hrs.
A seminar course that provides a comprehensive review of the literature concerning all areas of fixed prosthodontic therapy. Current literature from a variety of periodicals is also reviewed.

PROS 615 Advanced Complete Denture Prosthodontics, 2 hrs.
A seminar, laboratory and clinical course regarding complete denture construction. Laboratory and clinical experience is obtained with concurrent review of the literature regarding treatment of the edentulous patient.

PROS 618 Prosthodontic Considerations in Reconstructive Implantology, 2 hrs.
A seminar course involving treatment planning considerations and the treatment procedures in implant prosthodontics.

PROS 620 Advanced Prosthodontic Clinics II, 24 hrs.
A clinical course designed to cover fundamental and advanced prosthodontic principles in patient care.

PROS 621 Maxillofacial Prosthetics, 2 hrs.
A lecture/seminar format which reviews the principles of maxillofacial prosthetics for patients with acquired and congenital defects. Impression techniques, laboratory procedures, surgery, oncology and psycho-social aspects are also discussed.

PROS 623 Removable Prosthodontics Literature Review, 5 hrs.
A seminar course that provides a comprehensive review of the literature concerning all areas of removable prosthodontic therapy. Current literature from a variety of periodicals is also reviewed.

PROS 624 Advanced Removable Partial Denture Prosthodontics, 4 hrs.
A seminar course that addresses the fundamentals of removable partial denture design, fabrication, rationale for use, patient selection and advanced techniques for attachment to the hard tissues.

PROS 630 Advanced Prosthodontic Clinics III, 24 hrs.
A clinical course designed to cover fundamental and advanced prosthodontic principles in patient care.
