Networking

Campus Network

The UIC campus network consists of local networks within buildings and a campus backbone network that connects the local networks to each other and to other networks off campus.

The campus backbone is a redundant distributed ATM-based backbone with four OC-12 (622 Mbps) inter-connections on campus, and one OC-3 (155 Mbps) connection to the commodity Internet (via Nap.net and the Illinois Century Network local ISPs).

The campus network is also connected to high-performance research networks like Abilene (Internet2), vBNS, STAR-TAP, StarLight and MREN.

An additional, dedicated OC-3 (155 Mbps) connection links UIC to the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Most offices already have network connections. All buildings are wired with fiber, and fiber or twisted-pair cable is used to bring the network to telephone closets and wall bjacks. Switched-10 Ethernet and Switched-100 FastEthernet is used throughout campus for individual and subnet high-bandwidth connectivity.
The UIC backbone will be upgraded to Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet in 2002-2003.

Dialin Lines

ACCC currently offers over 1,100 56 Kbps dialin lines to connect to UIC and the Internet from home or from off campus, via traditional telephone/modem hook-up.
These dialin lines have a 5 hour time limit; their off-campus phone numbers are:

  • 312-666-9000
  • 312-666-2001
  • 312-666-2002

Additional lines are available with a 30-minute time limit, and for dialing in from Rockford and Peoria.

Access is free-of-charge, but restricted to the UIC faculty, staff and registered students with valid UIC netid and password.
