Wireless Networking

ACCC is in the process of designing and deploying a wireless infrastructure based on IEEE 802.11 wireless Ethernet standards and Virtual Private Network (VPN) encryption for security.

The wireless service will be initially available at a number of public areas, and to departments interested in setting it up in their buildings.
Deployment consists of placing, for example, 802.11b Access Points throughout the building, and equipping computers and PDAs with 802.11b wireless cards and the appropriate VPN client software.

Once authenticated and connected to a wireless LAN access point, a notebook computer or PDA is a legitimate network citizen, with access to the campus network, the Internet, and to any available network application or service.
Interested departments are urged to contact the ACCC Network Engineering Group via email at networks@uic.edu for details.

Network Security

Although the internet is a great place for learning and exploration, it is also a dangerous place these days for your computer if not protected properly. Practicing safe computing is definitely a requirement to prevent problems such as having your email account stolen.

To keep yourself safe, you should always: keep your password to yourself, be wary of anyone watching over your shoulder in a lab as you log on, use secure protocols when logging into machines over the net, and always remember to log off when you're done.

In addition, everyone that uses computer resources on campus are expected to read and follow the policies regulating computing activities on campus.
These policies are in place to protect all members of the UIC community.
