ACCC Overview

The Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) supports the educational and research needs of the UIC community by providing a variety of computing, networking and telecommunication services.

ACCC runs the campus network and the telephone system, and offers a number of services, including Internet access, public computer labs, electronic mail, computer consulting, instructional technology support, teaching and learning servers, Web publishing, site-licensed software, microcomputer repair, LAN support, supercomputing support network security and videoconferecing services.

The computing division main offices are in room 124, Benjamin Goldberg Research Center, at 1940 West Taylor Street, (312) 413-0196.

Available Servers

ACCC runs a number of servers. Most of them operate behind the scenes, offering basic services, such DNS, DHCP, WINS, SQL, Web, Bluestem, Novell, Windows NT and RealMedia streaming services, sending, receiving and distributing email, among others.

Servers with user accounts include:

  • Tigger - a general-purpose UNIX system for faculty and staff (Web, email, etc.)
  • Icarus - a general purpose UNIX system for students (Web, email, etc.)
  • Mailserv - email only for faculty and staff
  • Borg - a research and number crunching compute server for faculty and researchers
  • Lotus Notes - specialized database and Web publishing for faculty and staff
  • PC Lab Servers - Novell servers for faculty staff and students. Accounts are automatically created for Tigger, Icarus and Mailserv users
  • Blackboard - a specialized instructional Web server for faculty and their students
  • RealSystem - a RealMedia streaming server for instructional use, accessed through a file system mounted on Tigger
