U-Print > Printing Tips

Reducing Output Hints

In this day in age, where WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), there is no need to be printing your output just to proof read it. Here are some tips to help you reduce the amount of printing that you do:

  • Use the built in spell checker that most applications have to check for spelling errors (and grammar!).
  • Use the print preview option where available to see things such as page breaks, headers and footers.
  • Don't print your job after every change you make. Work on your document for a while (saving it often!) and print only once for a final proofread.
  • Print only one copy. Shop around for places where making photocopies is cheaper than printing.
  • Print duplex (this will be the default). Jobs printed single-sided use more than a duplex printed page and waste more paper.
  • Turn off graphics in Web browsers to minimize the number of pages in Web output.
  • Printing 2-up or 4-up to include even more printed pages on a single sheet of paper.

Printing Large Jobs

Jobs of 50 pages or more that are submitted for printing can only be printed in labs that have at least 2 printers.

Currently, these labs are: SRC, CCC, BSB and SSB.

BGRC and SEL2265 will have a second printer added sometime Fall semester.

Duplex (Double Sided)/Simplex (Single Sided) Printing

To help in our goal to reduce waste, we have enabled duplex (double sided) printing in our printers by default.

This setting maximizes your quota since jobs printed double sided count as a single page.

If you need to print a job single sided, follow these steps on the PC:

  • Go to the File menu
  • Select Print
  • Click on Properties
  • Select More Options
  • Click on None to remove double sided printing
  • Click on OK
  • Click on Apply
  • Click on OK
  • Click on OK to print the job.
