Student employment opportunities

The Client Services Office of ACCC is conducting a Spring 2012 semester hiring campaign. Limited resources dictate special requirements and considerations as well as a shorter timetable. Review this page carefully before submitting an application and registering for a technical test. You will be tested on your understanding of these job requirements and your application will be reviewed for full compliancy. We did not anticipate the need to hire for Spring 2012 and thus, we appreciate both your interest and understanding as we begin the abbreviated process.

Job descriptions and general responsibilities

The Client Services Office (CSO) is part of the UIC Academic Computing and Communications Center. The CSO handles new student hiring, basic training and supervision and is located in 2267 SELE. New student employees will work as lab monitors in any one of the ACCC computer labs located on campus. Special note: for Spring 2012, lab monitors will be trained using a combination of the following: traditional full-day training (2 days), on-the-job shadowing and mandatory Wednesday training (4-6pm).

All ACCC student employees are supporting faculty, staff and student use of diverse ACCC computing services in whatever role or location they are scheduled in. Consider the diverse range of services: ACCC computer labs, U-Print printing services, Blackboard, UIC-Wireless, WebStore software sales, netid and common password service support and e-mail. Students moving into our MicroRepair and LAN positions are supporting lab hardware, providing service calls to faculty/staff as well as deploying software in our diverse lab environment.

LETS (Learning Environments & Technology Services) provides audio/video technology support for UIC's varied learning environments (classrooms, lecture centers, etc.).

Specifically, new student employees hired by the CSO:

  • work as lab monitors in ACCC public computer labs, assisting with basic account and access issues, software use, printing services, general network connectivity issues and enforcement of the Acceptable Use Policy. As lab monitors, employees maintain the lab environment and are the first to troubleshoot, fix and/or report problems with lab equipment. Lab monitors also assist users with special accessibility needs.
    • Beginning Spring 2012, ACCC will staff the Library's new IDEA Commons on a 24-hour basis, four nights a week. The evening shift is staffed 11pm to 7am. An applicants' ability to work this shift will be a consideration, not a criterion, of employment.
  • work as LETS audio/video technicians in UIC's learning environments. LETS technicians assist faculty with multimedia technology and other classroom issues via phone, walk-ins and on-site support. In addition, students will assist LETS staff with setup of audio/visual equipment for special events on campus. LETS serves as the one-stop-shop for all issues in the UIC East Campus learning environments.
  • work as helpdesk consultants at the Client Services Office, the primary helpdesk and point of contact for ACCC services. Support is provided in-person, via e-mail and phone.
  • work in other specialized areas: Microrepair, LAN/Software and Network Operations groups, in which specific services are developed and supported for both the ACCC and the campus community.

Advancement beyond the lab monitor position is based on ACCC staffing needs as well as a demonstrated aptitude for those areas.

You must register for a technical test at the time you submit your application. Although you can withdraw and change your registration, please note that seats are limited. Skills are assessed through both 1) an online test and 2) a proctored hands-on demonstration of ability and knowledge about the services ACCC provides. You will also be tested on the UIC Acceptable Use Policy.

If you are selected for hiring, you must be available for both forms of training:

  • Formal training (1/5 and 1/6)
