Student employment opportunities

ACCC Client Services Office has finished hiring for the Fall 2008 term; our goal was to hire enough students to provide sufficient staffing levels through Academic Year 2008-2009. Watch this space (bookmark the page!) for news on our next hiring efforts. We do canvas the campus with flyers and messages.

The application submission component of this document is disabled when we are not hiring. We do recommend a review of this document for those considering submitting an application. For applicants to be considered they must be available for the training dates and be ready to start work the first day of the term - no exceptions.

Job responsibilities

The Client Services Office (CSO) is part of the UIC Academic Computing and Communications Center. The CSO is located in SELE 2267, but student employees may work there or in any one of the ACCC computer labs located on campus. Regardless of area assigned, students are responsible for supporting faculty, staff and student efforts in using ACCC services such as: Blackboard, ACCC computer labs, U-Print, UIC wireless, software sales, netid, common password and e-mail and many others. Specifically, student employees:

  • work as lab monitors in ACCC public computer labs, assisting with basic account issues, software use, printing services, general network connectivity issues and enforcement of the Acceptable Use Policy. As lab monitors, employees are also the first to troubleshoot, fix and/or report problems with lab equipment. Lab monitors also assist users with special accessibility needs.
  • work as helpdesk consultants at the Client Services Office, the primary helpdesk and point of contact for ACCC services. Support is provided in-person, via e-mail and phone.
  • work in other specialized areas: Microrepair, LAN/Software and Network Operations groups, in which specific services are developed and supported for both the ACCC and the campus community. Advancement into other areas is based on ACCC staffing needs as well as a demonstrated aptitude for those areas.

ACCC student employees are not permitted to do homework while working.

Requirements

To be considered to work at the Client Services Office, you must fulfill all of the requirements below.

  • Be a registered UIC student (or at least eligible to register and have the intention to do so). Positions are limited to undergraduate students only. Graduate students should not apply.
  • You must be registered for at least 6 credit hours (if you are applying for a Summer term, you must be registered for the Fall term).
  • You should have at least three (3) non-summer terms of undergraduate study left at UIC.
  • You should be in good academic standing.
  • You must be able to work at least 12 hours a week, plus attend a 1.5 hour meeting on Wednesdays at 4pm (exceptions are only made for those who have a class scheduled at this time).
  • You must be flexible in submitting hours of work availability. Your work schedule is built around your class schedule but we require that a wide range of hours be submitted for scheduling consideration (many of our facilities open at 8am and can be staffed until 9pm). Thus, you will be required to submit morning, daytime and evening availability (weekend shifts are not available to newly hired employees).
  • Be able to take the technical skills test component of the application process and be available for an interview.
  • Attend the training. Final hiring decisions are made contingent on your attendance and performance during training. If you pass the training, you will be compensated for it.
  • Have solid communication skills, both verbal and written.

Compensation and work study

If eligible, we ask that you apply for Federal Work Study funds. When you apply for financial aid, your eligibility for Work Study funds will be determined. For more information, see the Financial Aid website.

The starting wage for student employees for academic year 2008-2009 is $8.26 per hour. Performance reviews take place after the three month probationary period of employment.

Application

We do not support partial applications nor can a submitted application be modified later. There are open-ended questions which may require more time to complete. Do not start the application unless you are prepared to submit it.

You must register for a technical test at the time you submit your application. Although you can withdraw and change your registration, please note that seats are limited. Skills are assessed through both an online test and a hands-on demonstration of ability and knowledge about the services ACCC provides. You will also be tested on the acceptable use policy.

If you are selected for hiring, you must be available for training - see important dates. Compensation for training depends on successful completion of the entire training session, including passing a written test of training material. No exceptions will be made.
