Using the UIC LDAP White Pages with Macs

If you run into any problems (including waiting more than 5 seconds for results on a high-speed link) please send a report to systems@uic.edu.

Please include at least:

  • Detailed description of failure including complete text of any error messages
  • Name and version of your email client
  • Details of the clicks and typing you used to configure the client
  • IP address (DNS name) of the machine you were running the test from
  • Date and time of a the failed lookup attempt
  • Your query / name of person(s) you were trying to look up

Using the UIC LDAP Server with Eudora 6 for Macs

  1. Open Eudora.
  2. Select Eudora -> Preferences, then scroll down and click on Hosts.
  3. Type: ldap://ldap.uic.edu/ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
    in the Ph/LDAP Server: box.
  4. Click the "Live" Directory service queries box.
  5. Click OK to save your changes.

Using LDAP Directory Services with Eudora 6 for Macs

  1. Open a new email message in Eudora.
  2. Click the Address book icon; it's a brown-covered book lying on its side. (Note this is the Address book in Eudora; not the Mac OS X Address Book.)
  3. Click Directory Services. (Or open Directory Services directly from the Windows menu.)

  4. Type the name of the person that you want to look up in the Enter query: box; the search will be made automatically.
  5. Scroll down to the information about the person you are looking for, and click in the description to select that person. (Nothing about the display will change.)

Notice from the screen shot above that the LDAP server returns a lot of information about the individuals, including their campus address and telephone numbers, their personal Web pages if they are published, and their title and department if they are faculty or staff.
  6. Click To:, Cc:, or Bcc: button at the bottom, and you will return to your message with the person's name and address in that address field.

Using Penelope Eudora with UIC LDAP

Penelope Eudora is the Mozilla Project's beta of Eudora version 8.0. (I've used it pretty extensibly on both Windows and Mac OS, and I like it a lot.)

Here is how to set LDAP up in it:

  1. Eudora -> Preferences
  2. Composition -> Addressing -> click Directory Server -> Edit
  3. Directories -> Add
  4. Fill in the General tab:
    • Name: UIC LDAP Server
    • Hostname: ldap.uic.edu
    • Base DN: ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
    • Port number: 389
    • Leave Bind DN: blank.
    • Leave the Use secure connection (SSL) box unchecked.
  5. Then the Advanced tab:
    • Don't return more than [100] results
    • Click Subtree
    • Search filter: (objectclass=*)
  6. Click OK, OK.
  7. Make sure that UIC LDAP is selected for your Directory Server in the Addressing tab and Directory Server is checked.
  8. Close the window.

To use the UIC LDAP Server,

  1. Open a new message.
  2. Click in To: or another address area.
  3. Type the name or netid of the person you want to send email to.
  4. The names will appear in a box below, with the list changing as you type. When you see the person you want, click to add the name to the address list.

Using the UIC LDAP Server with Address Book

If you're connected to a network that is set up to use network directories, the Mac Address Book automatically searches for addresses on the directory servers on the network. You can set your Address Book up to search for address information on LDAP server(s) you specify. It works really great with the UIC LDAP server and it's very easy to set up.

  1. Open the Address Book.
  2. Click Address Book -> Preferences...-> LDAP.
  3. Click + (OS X) or Add.
  4. Fill out the LDAP configuration box as follows:
    • Name: UIC LDAP
    • Server: ldap.uic.edu
    • Search Base ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
    • Leave Port: 389
    • Scope: One level
    • The image below is from Mac OS X; you don't have to fill out the Authentication information at the bottom.

  5. Click Save and close the Preferences window.

Using the UIC LDAP Server with Mail.app

After you have LDAP set up with Address Book, open Mail.app and open a new message. Type a name -- either a last or a first name will do, but unless the first name is very usual, you might not find your person -- in an address line and the names and email addresses of people at UIC whose names match what your have typed will be listed.

To select a person from the list, click on his or her name/email address.

For example, when I typed "Lovel", LDAP suggested Ada Byron Lovelace (the person I was looking for), and three other people whose last names began with "lovel". Snazzy, huh?

Using the UIC LDAP Server with Mozilla and Thunderbird

  1. In either Mozilla/Netscape or Thunderbird, click the Address Book icon.
  2. In the address book's main menu, select File -> New -> LDAP Directory...
  3. Fill in the General tab:
    • Name: UIC LDAP Server
    • Hostname: ldap.uic.edu
    • Base DN: ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
    • Port number: 389
    • Leave Bind DN: blank.
    • Leave the Use secure connection (SSL) box unchecked.
  4. Then the Advanced tab:
    • Don't return more than [100] results
    • Scope: Click Subtree
    • Search filter: (objectclass=*)
  5. Click OK.

Then UIC LDAP Server will be added to your list of Address Books.

To use the UIC LDAP Server,

  1. Write a new message.
  2. Select UIC LDAP Server from the drop-down list on the Contacts area on the left.
  3. Type the name or netid of the person you want to send email to in the Search For: field below it.
  4. The names will appear in the Name field below as you type the name in the Search For: field. When you see the person you want, either click to highlight the name and then click the Add to To: or Add to Cc: buttons, or double-click to add it to To:.
  5. It's obvious why the second (Judith Grobe Sachs) and third (last name begins with "Grobe") names are listed in the illustration above, but the first took a bit of thinking. He matches because he is a student, and his name is "G Robe..." and therefore his netid starts with "g" + "robe".

Using the UIC LDAP Server with Entourage

  1. Open Entourage.
  2. Click Tools -> Accounts.
  3. Select the Directory Services tab, and click New.
  4. Fill out the Account Settings tab as follows:
    • Account n ame: UIC LDAP
    • LDAP s erver: ldap.uic.edu
    • Skip the rest of the page; our LDAP server doesn't require authorization.
  5. Fill ou the Options tab as follows:
    • Maximum number of results to return: 100
      (No more please.)
    • Search base: ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
    • The image below is from Mac OS X
      Entourage LDAP options tab

  6. Click OK and close the Accounts window.

To use the UIC LDAP Server,

  1. Click New to open a new message.
  2. Click in To: or another address area.
  3. Type the name or netid of the person you want to send email to.
    Using LDAP in Entourage
  4. The names will appear in a box below, with the list changing as you type. When you see the person you want, click to add the name to the address list.
(My name, Judith Grobe Sachs, appears twice, because I've recieved email from me, so my email address appears in my history list, and also because I'm in LDAP. The last name is there because the student's first name begins with "g" and last name begins with "robe" = a netid that begins with "grobe".
