Using LDAP with Eudora on Windows Vista
|
| |
When Eudora is installed on a computer running Windows Vista, you cannot set up Directory Services in Eudora because the New Database
button does not work. A UIC user discovered that you can active that button by going to the Control Panel:
- Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account
Control On or Off, to turn it off
- Click Continue when Windows asks for your permission to continue.
- Click in the box to unselect Use User Account Control to help protect your Computer.
- Click OK.
- Reboot your computer. Warning; it seems to me that doing this broke the fingerprint reader on the computer I was working on; make sure you know your account's password before you reboot!
- Set up LDAP as described in Setting Up Eudora for Windows for UIC LDAP below. Warning: If Eudora asks you to define a new user, click Cancel to get past the define a new user dialog box.
- Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account
Control On or Off
- Click Continue when Windows asks for your permission to continue.
- Click in the box to select Use User Account Control to help protect your Computer, to turn it back on.
- Click OK.
- Reboot your computer.
After you create an LDAP database, turn User Account Control back on and
still create or modify your Directory Services databases.

Using Penelope Eudora with UIC LDAP
|
| |
Penelope Eudora is the Mozilla Project's beta of Eudora version 8.0. (I've used it pretty extensibly on both Windows and Mac OS, and I like it a lot.)

- Tools -> Options
- Composition -> Addressing -> click Directory Server -> Edit
- Directories -> Add
- Fill in the General tab:
- Name: UIC LDAP Server
- Hostname: ldap.uic.edu
- Base DN: ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
- Port number: 389
- Leave Bind DN: blank.
- Leave the Use secure connection (SSL) box unchecked.
- Then the Advanced tab:
- Don't return more than [100] results
- Click Subtree
- Search filter: (objectclass=*)
- Click OK, OK.
- Make sure that UIC LDAP is selected for your
Directory Server in the Addressing tab and Directory Server is checked.

Setting up Outlook 2002/Windows 2000 with UIC LDAP
|
| |
The ACCC doesn't support Outlook, and all the Outlooks work differently, but
here is how you use UIC LDAP with Outlook 2002 (also known as Outlook XP).
LDAP directories are important with Outlook, because Outlook doesn't support
the Ph directory we've had before.
- Open Outlook.
- Select Tools ->
Email Accounts.
- Click Add a new directory or address book and click the Next>
button.

- We're adding an LDAP database, so click Internet Director Service (LDAP),
and click Next>.

- n the Directory Service (LDAP) Settings window, in the Server Name: box,
type: ldap.uic.edu
Click the More Settings button. (We don't have to log on.)
Note: You will be warned that you will have to exit from and restart Outlook
before the "email account" you're defining can be used. Substitute
directory and that's true. :-)
- For Display Name: type a name for the directory, say: UIC
LDAP, in particular,
Leave the Port as 389.

- In the Search tab, Search base: ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
You can set the Search timeout and Maximum number of entries as you wish.
The UIC LDAP server currently returns 100 matches for each search.

- Click OK
- You will return to the Directory Service Settings screen. Click Next>.
- Click Finish
- Close Outlook and restart it.

Using UIC LDAP with Outlook 2002
|
| |
- Open Outlook.
- Select Tools ->
Address Books.

- Select UIC LDAP from the drop down list of available directories.
(Or whatever you called it.)
- You might be tempted to type your search query in the Type Name or Select
from List: box on this screen, but that won't work. Instead, click the
Find Items icon, second from the right, which looks like an open book
with a magnifying glass over it.
- In the Find dialog box, you can just type the name in the Display name:
box, or you can construct a more detailed search.
For example, the following illustrates a search for people whose entire
name ("display name") contains "grobe", somewhere. Click Contains if
the part of the name or whatever that you've typed isn't necessarily at the
beginning of the field.
Click OK to execute the search.

- The results are listed in the Address Book window. Highlight the
line listing the person you are interested in.

- The third icon, a hand pointing to a paper, displays details about the
person, or you can double-click on the person's name.

Click the Add to: Personal Address Book button to add this person
to your Outlook Contact List. This is really the way to go, because it
will add all the information in the Properties to your contact list.
And you can add a person that you already have in your Contact List;
you can choose to update your existing listing with the new data.
- The remainder of the icons in the Address Book window are tools
that you can use with the highlighted person.
- The fifth, and open book, adds the person to your personal address book.
- The sixth, a starred envelope, opens a new message to the person.

Other Outlook Versions
|

There are instructions for additional Outlook versions clients at:
http://web.uvic.ca/~gsagert/projects/directory/LDAPEmail.htm
Be sure to modify these values mentioned in the University of Victora Web
page:
LDAP Server (Host) Name: ldap.uic.edu
Search Base: ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu

Using the UIC LDAP Server with Mozilla and Thunderbird
|
| |
In Mozilla Thunderbird,
- Click on Tools -> Options. An Options window will open.
- Click on the Compositon icon.
- In Address Autocompletion section, check Directory Server and then click the Edit Directories... button.
- An LDAP Directory Servers window will open.
- Click the Add button.
- Fill in the General tab:
- Name: UIC LDAP Server
- Hostname: ldap.uic.edu
- Base DN: ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
- Port number: 389
- Leave Bind DN: blank.
- Leave the Use secure connection (SSL) box unchecked.
- Then the Advanced tab:
- Don't return more than [100] results
- Scope: Click Subtree
- Search filter: (objectclass=*)
- Click OK.
Mozilla Email,
- Click on Edit -> Preferences. A Preference window will open.
- Navigate to Mail & Newsgroups -> Addressing
- Follow steps 3-8 for Mozilla Thunderbird above.
To use the UIC LAPD Server,
- Write a new message.
- Type the name or netid of the person you want to send email to in the To: or Cc: field.
- The names will appear in a box below below as you type. When you see the person you want, click to select the highlighted name.

- When searching for matches for grobe, the first is a guess that grobe@uic.edu is the netid I'm looking for. The second is from my personal address books; "J Grobe" is a relative. The fourth, "Judith Grobe Sachs", is obvious. The third one took a bit of thinking. "G Roberts" matches because he is a student, and his netid starts with "g" + "robe".
