Other Email Systems and Tools

General Mail Tools

  • Email Diagnostics and Quota pages; use this utility to check how much email you have on the server, download or delete entire mailboxes, repair locked POP sessions, set up server email filters and vacation notices
  • ACCC Email Addressbook Conversion page; use this utility to convert your email address data from one ACCC-supported email system to another or from one ACCC email server to another.
  • ACCC Automatic Email Filtering Tools for Incoming Email; set up automatic filtering of incoming email. See Email Filters Page Help for more information. If your email account is on mailserv in particular, you should turn the ACCC antispam filter; it will catch the vast majority of your spam for you. There's information on the mailserv antispam filter in the Email Filters Page Help page.
  • There are link to these and other email tools on the ACCC Email page: Go to the ACCC home page: http://www.accc.uic.edu, click the purple Email button.

  • UIC Announce, Post your announcement on the Web in a place where many people look for such announcement and send email notification of your posting to your target audience.
  • Making Email Talk with MIME, an introduction to sending files and other goodies by email.
  • PGP Encryption for files and email

  • Do you want the email you receive on your ACCC account to be automatically sent to another email account? Forwarding email in UNIX explains how. (Though automatic filtering is a better way to do this; see the ACCC email filtering tools (above) .)
  • And there's a lot more you can do with your email on tigger or icarus. Procmail will automatically run programs when you receive mail. Use these programs to filter your mail into various inboxes, or to send vacation replies, etc. While procmail filters do work with Eudora when used with IMAP, people who read their email with POP will probably find it easier to filter mail using their email pro filters.
    General procmail description
  • Note: many procmail functions can be setup through the Web, which allow you to use procmail filters with mailserv also, including ones that will work with people who use POP to read their email. The ACCC email filtering tools (above) allow you to easily set up procmail filters on the Web.

Do you use a commercial ISP?

Do you use a commercial ISP when dialing in from home? Then you must send email through your ISP when you're doing your UIC email at home, except when you're using WebMail or pine. For more information, see Changing to Your ISP's SMTP Server.

Using a commercial ISP to connect to the UIC campus has other consequences that you should consider; see Warning: When you connect through a commercial ISP, you are not "on the UIC campus".
