FaCT - Faculty Computer Trade-in

  * Urgent Update: We have been forced to temporarily suspend the purchase of computers due to budgetary issues. We were currently in the process of a current batch, FY08B, but now regrettably we must postpone the purchase of new computers to those faculty selected. Once we get the green light and have the funds appropriated to us, we will continue with this batch which will be re-named appropriately while maintaining the list of selected faculty who were affected by the postponement. We sincerely apologize for this unforeseen inconveniance however, we will continue to work and provide support to our faculty. FY08A has been completed in late Fall 2007. New faculty, at present, are still being processed. If you have any questions, please contact us at fact@uic.edu. Thank you for you understanding.

Current Batch - FY0?? - (FY07B moved to FY08A)

The faculty selected for the Fall 2007 batch can be located in FY08A. Information regarding the previous batch can be located here: FY07A

What if I have NOT been selected to receive a new machine yet?

In order for us to consider you for a FaCT machine, we need to have an inventory of your current machine. You should do that by following the instructions detailed later on in this Web page (preferred method). If you have trouble running the inventory software on your machine, you can send us the information via email to fact@uic.edu (please include: full name, netid, department, office address and phone number, machine brand, processor speed, memory and hard disk space).
The list of eligible faculty indicates whether we have the inventory information for your machine or not.

Faculty who have already been selected

Faculty who have already received a machine can be found here here.

What is FaCT?

The Provost and the UIC Administration have actively supported faculty's effort to keep UIC at the forefront of technology use in education. They are also aware that in order for UIC to remain competitive, faculty need access to the resources to support such an endeavor. One of the limiting factors for faculty involvement in developing online resources for research and teaching is the lack of adequate machines on their desks. To that effect, the Provost is providing the Academic Computing and Communications Center with recurring funds for the Faculty Computer Trade-in (FaCT). Goals are as follows:

a) Provide machines to faculty that are new to UIC who meet the requirement b) Update existing faculty machines, starting with the lowest end machines c) Upgrade the FaCT machines on a 4 year cycle.

Who is the program for?

The program is for benefits-eligible tenured and tenured track faculty only. Emeritus faculty are not eligible. Eligible faculty must also have a UIC netid and UIC email account to participate. To check if you are eligible, please search or browse through this list.

What kind of machine will I get? ( FY?? )

We are striving to provide the campus with nicely equipped Windows PC's or Mac desktop machines.
Please note:We encourage FaCT recipients to recycle their current machine by re-using it within their department. ACCC does not remove or take your existing PC. You can also keep both your existing machine and the new machine, if needed.

For FY?? recipients, the configurations are located here

Can I get a different PC/Mac configuration?

There is no option to upgrade the configurations for PC/Mac.

I have a Mac, can I get a PC instead (or I have a PC, can I get Mac instead)?

Yes, you will be able to choose a different machine than what you currently have. You will have a chance to pick at the time you select your machine.

How does the program work?

Because we are in a 4 year replacement cycle, only about 1/4 of those eligible will get a new machine in any given year. The process is like this:

  1. Select the faculty that qualify for the program.
  2. Eligible faculty must have a UIC Netid and password to proceed.
  3. All eligible faculty must inventory their machines once a year in order to be considered for a new machine.
  4. Each year we will select faculty members with the lowest end machines at that time.
  5. The list(s) containing the names of those that qualify will be made available on this web site.
  6. They will need to select the machine they would like to have as detailed in this web site and whether or not they require assistance setting up the machine.
  7. We will order the machines and have them delivered to the faculty's office
  8. Setup an appointment to install the machine if they had requested ACCC's assistance.

This process will repeat itself every year.

Who makes the decision as to which type of machine to receive?
The faculty member is the one receiving the machine, not the department, hence the decision as to which machine to choose is the faculty member's and not the department's. Of course, we encourage faculty members to take into consideration things such as what platform will best benefit their work in the department and allow them to connect/use the resources that the department may provide. But in the end, it is the faculty member's decision as to which machine to choose.

Who owns the new computer?
The machine is given to the faculty member, not to the department. So the faculty member owns the machine as long as he/she remains employed by the university (in the same or other department) under the same FaCT eligible conditions: tenure or tenure track, benefits eligible. Should the faculty member retire, leave the university, or move to another department with a position that is not tenure/tenure track, benefits eligible, then the machine remains in the last department that the faculty member was at as a FaCT eligible faculty member.

What is the cost of participating in the program?

There is no cost for the faculty member (unless you select the option to upgrade). The program is fully funded by the Provost office.

When will I get my new machine?

As the machines are inventoried, we will be selecting those faculty members with the lowest end machines. Each year's order will be split into 3 batches. We will notify you via email and this web site of when the next batch is ready to be processed.

Once the new machine arrives, you will have the option of installing the machine yourself or you can schedule the ACCC to install it for you at the next available appointment. There is no wait to obtain your machine if you want to install it yourself.

What kind of information are you collecting when I use the inventory software to scan my machine?

The only information that we collect is about the hardware installed on your machine. We will ask you demographic information before the program runs so we can match the hardware information with the machine. Here is a sample report.
The program only runs when you execute it.

The inventory program cannot run on my machine; what should I do?

If you are having problems running the inventory software, send an email message to fact@uic.edu with the following information:

1) Information about you: Name, department, email address, office location and phone number
2) Information about your machine: Machine brand, model, processor speed, memory and hard disk space
3) (Optional). Network information: IP address, IP host name, IP domain, and IP gateway.

What will happen to my older machine?

We encourage you to recycle your older machine by giving it to someone else in your department (or other departments). If the machine cannot be recycled, it will need to be taken out of inventory and surplused. Please contact your department's business manager for information on how to do this.

How do I get ready to receive the new machine?

You will need to make a back up of the personal files on your current personal computer to a floppy, external hard drive, or CD ROM so that you can copy them to your new machine. If you do not have a ZIP drive that you can use to backup your machine, you can borrow a ZIP drive and ZIP disk from ACCC for 48 hours to make copies of your files.

Given that the configuration of the machine that you are currently using and the new machine are different, it is not possible to copy the entire contents of the old machine to the new one.

What services are included with my new machine?

Hardware

Your new machine will be delivered to you or you can pick it up yourself when your turn comes. ACCC will provide PC hardware support for up to 4 years of the date the machine was purchased (4 years for Macs).

This support is provided free of charge for the original equipment provided with the machine. Service charges will apply for support of additional hardware or peripherals connected to the machine.

NOTE: This service applies only while the original professor has the FaCT machine. It does not apply once the machine is given to someone else.

Software & Server Services

ACCC will provide free Server Services to the faculty member assigned this machine. Issues regarding installation or configuration are also supported and provided at no charge. Software updates are provided via Server Services and are up to the faculty member or REACH member to install.

Your machine will come with

  1. Antivirus Software,
  2. ADSM Backup software,
  3. MS Office and
  4. Server Services

already installed, you will have access to much of the software that you use. Here is a list of Server Services Software, and instructions on setting ADSM up on your machine are in ADSM Backup for FaCT Personal Computers.

All other questions regarding software usage need to be directed to your REACH member or to the Client Services Office.

NOTE: This service applies only while the original professor has the FaCT machine. It does not apply once the machine is given to someone else.

Installation

When your turn to receive a new machine arrives, ACCC will install the software mentioned above. You then have the following choices:

  1. Pick up the machine without further delays
  2. Have the machine delivered at the next available delivery time but still unpack and install the machine yourself
  3. Schedule the next available appointment for ACCC to bring and install the machine for you.

I just purchased a new machine, can I get reimbursed?

There will be no reimbursement for machines that were recently purchased. You will however, be inventoried and will receive a new machine in future years of the FaCT program.

Winstations and FaCT Computers

The FaCT computers are not replacements for Winstations owned by ITS. If your Winstation is owned by ITS, the machine should not be inventoried and will not be replaced by FaCT computers.

If you own the Winstation, ITS will only support a certain Dell machine as a Winstation machine. Since we are not providing Dell machines, the PCs that you will receive from us cannot be setup as Winstations as you have them today. If you want to receive the new machine, you have two options: Keep the DELL PC that you have as a Winstation and setup the new machine as second machine or, ITS provides access to the Gemini application via the Internet Explorer Web browser. Go to http://www.hospital.uic.edu and click on Remote Application Services to find out if accessing the applications this way will work for you.

OK, I am eligible for the program, what is the next step?

  • Note: If you have been selected for a batch, you do not need to submit your computer inventory.
  • The next step is for you to run the inventory program on your machine. Only those on the list of eligible faculty can continue to the next step. Follow the instructions to download, install and run the inventory program.

PLEASE NOTE: to participate in the program and to get to the next step, you must have a netid and an email account in an ACCC system. Some of the faculty on this list, are not listed in phonebook and others, although listed in phonebook, do not have a netid or email account. Look through the list of eligible faculty and if you see a next to your name, you are not listed in phonebook. If you see a next to your name it indicates that you do not have a UIC netid or UIC email address.
