Background info on the FaCT program

What is the FaCT program?

The Provost and UIC Administration have actively supported its faculty's effort to keep UIC at the forefront of technology use in education. They are also aware that, in order for UIC to remain competitive, its faculty needs access to the resources to support such an endeavor. One of the limiting factors for faculty involvement in developing online research and teaching resources is the lack of adequate computers on their desks. To that effect, the Provost provides the Academic Computing and Communications Center with recurring funds for the Faculty Computer Trade-in (FaCT). Our goals are as follows:

  • Provide machines to faculty members who are new to UIC and who meet the program's requirement.
  • Update existing faculty machines periodically, starting with the lowest end machines.
  • Upgrade each faculty member's FaCT machine approximately on a 4-year cycle.
  • Who is the program for?

FaCT is for benefits-eligible tenured and tenured track faculty only. Emeritus faculty are not eligible. Eligible faculty must also have a UIC NetID and UIC email account to participate. To check if you are eligible, please search or browse through this list.

To participate in the FaCT program, you must have a valid NetID and email account in the ACCC system. Some of the faculty on the list are not listed in the phonebook. Some faculty members are listed in the phonebook but either do not have a NetID or a UIC email account. Look through the list of eligible faculty, and if you see a next to your name, you are not listed in the phonebook. If you see a next to your name, you do not have a UIC NetID or UIC email address.

    How does the program work?

Because we are in an approximate 4-year replacement cycle, only about 1/4 of those eligible will get a new machine in any given year. The process is like this:

    Each year:
    1. Select the faculty that qualify for the program.
    2. Eligible faculty must have a UIC Netid and password to proceed.
    3. All eligible faculty new to the FaCT program must inventory their machine in order to be considered for a new machine.
    4. Each year we will select faculty members with the lowest end machines at that time.
    5. The list containing the names of those that qualify will be made available on this web site.
    6. Faculty will need to select the machine they would like to have as detailed in this web site and whether or not they require assistance setting up the machine.
    7. We will order the machines and have them delivered to the faculty's office
    8. Set up the appointment (and assistance, if requested) to install the machine.

This process will repeat itself every year.

What is the cost of participating in the program?

There is no cost for the faculty member to participate -- unless the option to upgrade is selected (usually for the Macbook Pro). The program is fully funded by the Provost office.

Questions about qualifying for the FaCT program

How do I know if I am qualified for the FaCT program?

The FaCT program is for benefits-eligible tenured and tenured track faculty only. Emeritus faculty are not eligible. Eligible faculty also must have a UIC NetID and UIC email account to participate. You may also check the list of eligible faculty to see if you qualify. If you believe your name should be on the list (but isn't), please send an email to fact@uic.edu to confirm your eligibility.

Where do I go to sign up?

ACCC automatically adds those who are qualified to the list (and an automated FaCT email is sent) and removes faculties who retire or leave. The list of eligible faculty is updated weekly.

I'm a new faculty member. Do I qualify?

If you are a new faculty, please send an email to fact@uic.edu to confirm your eligibility. Alternatively, you can see if your name is on the list of eligible faculty members. Once we have confirmed your eligibility status, we will proceed to order a computer of your choice from the list we provide.

I'm Not a new faculty member. Do I qualify?

If you are not a new faculty, please send an email to fact@uic.edu to confirm your eligibility. Alternatively, you can see if your name is on the list of eligible faculty members. Once we have confirmed your eligibility status, we will proceed to place you in our FaCT queue for a machine.

What if I have not been selected to receive a machine yet?

In order for us to consider you for a FaCT machine, we need to have an inventory of your current machine. In order to send us an inventory of your current machine, you'll have to download our inventory program. Click here for the inventory program. Follow the instructions to download, install, and run the inventory program. The list of eligible faculty indicates whether we have the inventory information for your machine or not.

Why didn't I receive a machine in this batch?

The selection process is based on the pool of faculty members who are in queue to receive a replacement computer. Faculty members who are selected are those who have the lowest-end machine at the time of selection.

I'm eligible for the program. What's the next step?

The next step is for you to run the inventory program on your machine. Only those on the list of eligible faculty can continue to the next step. Follow the instructions to download, install, and run the inventory program.

I am on the list of qualified faculty. Why am I not getting a machine?

If you are qualified for the FaCT program, you will need to run the inventory software called Aimit. This program will collect the hardware data of your computer and you will be part of the pool of eligible professors whom we select to receive new computers.

The inventory program can be downloaded from here. Follow the instructions to download, install, and run the inventory program.

Help! The inventory software is not working.

If the inventory program ran correctly on your computer, you should have gone through a few steps and should have been able to submit your name and NetID.
If the inventory software is not working properly, please send an email to fact@uic.edu with the following information:
  • Information about yourself: Name, department, NetID, email address, office location and phone number
  • Information about your current machine: Machine brand, model, processor speed, memory and hard disk space
  • (Optional) Network information: IP address, IP host name, IP domain, and IP gateway

    Any other questions?

Please send a detailed email to fact@uic.edu
