  • Questions about owning a FaCT computer

Is there a FaCT tech-support line?

The MicroRepair consultants are trained and equipped to troubleshoot hardware and software issues for FaCT machines. If a service call is needed, please call ACCC at 3-0003 or log a service request to fact@uic.edu.

Questions about Repairing a FaCT PC Computer.

FaCT computers have a 4 warranty that covers any manufacturer hardware malfunction. Please email fact@uic.edu for further support and resolution. If the repair is due to non manufacturer problems such as computer being dropped, or food/liquid spillage which renders the computer inoperable in some form, the faculty's dept. will incur all fees/charges in order to bring the computer back to working, functional condition. In the case of food/liquid spillage, an advanced cleaning of the computer is required to bring the inoperable computer back to a working, functional state in which case, a $50/hour service call fee will be charged.

Can I change the configuration on my FaCT machine?

You are welcome to make modifications in the software and hardware of your FaCT machine. However, once the original configuration is changed, you waive the service warranty that comes with the FaCT computer. We will repair or replace the original hardware parts of the computer. However, service calls for hardware and software that aren't covered by the FaCT program will incur an hourly cost of $50.

Can you order other hardware for my FaCT computer?

You have the liberty of adding hardware and peripherals to your FaCT computer. You should be able to purchase these parts from outside vendors, with the cost shouldered by your department or you. We can provide assistance in the installation with the fee of $50 per hour. However, any changes made on the original configuration of the FaCT machine voids the service warranty on these machines. Only the original parts of the FaCT computer will be covered by the 4-year warranty.

What is the product key for my version of Windows?

The key code is printed on a sticker, which is taped to the backside of the computer tower.

What is my Novell login and password?

What is my Novell login and password? PC computers received prior to Spring 2007 are configured to use Novell Directory system to manage shared resources. The installed Novell client controls authentication not only to the local machine but also access to network shares such as software sharing and departmental file sharing. Since March of 2008, we have moved all these resources to our Windows Active Directory services. All FaCT users MUST remove the Novell Client from their computer. To access network resources such as AD Software Services, or AD Storage Services, FaCT faculty members can simply use their netid and common password.

Can I format and re-install Windows?

You are welcome to make modifications on your computer. Keep in mind that only the original configuration (for both software and hardware) of the computer will be supported by our office free of charge.

I did not receive the instruction packet. Where can I get a copy of it?

  • Here is the .pdf format of the instruction packet: PC and Mac.
  • If you have problems printing this document, please send email to fact@uic.edu, and we can send you a hard copy of the receipt via campus mail.

I removed the Novell client from my system after I finished configuring my Windows XP machine, and now I cannot login. Help!

If you removed Novell Client from your system, the XP Welcome Window login screen will become the default login window upon booting up. The Adminstrator account does not appear in this window. You will need to switch to the Classic Window login screen bypressing CTL + ALT + DEL twice in order to login using the Administrator account. Make sure to create a user account for future login purposes.

It's not clear to me if the Administrator password was over-ridden by the Novell password I set up. Which password should I use when logging into my computer?

Novell is not supported anymore. Removing Novell client. http://www.novell.com/documentation/noclienu/noclienu/index.html?page=/documentation/noclienu/noclienu/data/btx7tjm.html AD Software Services https://tigger.uic.edu/htbin/perlwrap-auth/csoadmin/wiki/view/Main/ADDA Ad Storage Services https://tigger.uic.edu/htbin/perlwrap-auth/csoadmin/wiki/view/Main/ADDADrive

I forgot my Administrator password. Help!

If you did not create any other user account for your Windows Vista system, and you do not have access to the Administrator account, you have two options to bypass the login restriction:

    1. You can restore your computer to its original configuration by running the software restoration process where you start from the beginning of Windows Vista again (this time taking note of the Administrator account setup process). This option is preferable if you have data backed up or if you do not have data in the system that will be lost. This process takes about 15 minutes.
    2. The ACCC can use the FaCT Vista Admin account to reset and create a user account for you. Please email fact@uic.edu to schedule a service call.

Where can I find the inventory software to download and scan my computer?

Click here to access the inventory software. You must be eligible for the FaCT program in order to access this web page. Email fact@uic.edu if you believe you are eligible but cannot access the inventory software.

    Winstations and FaCT computers

The FaCT computers are not replacements for Winstations owned by ITS. If your Winstation is owned by ITS, the machine should not be inventoried and will not be replaced by FaCT computers.

If you own the Winstation, ITS will only support a certain Dell machine as a Winstation machine. Since we are not providing Dell machines, the PCs that you will receive from us cannot be setup as Winstations as you have them today. If you want to receive the new machine, you have two options: Keep the DELL PC that you have as a Winstation and setup the new machine as second machine or, ITS provides access to the Gemini application via the Internet Explorer Web browser. Go to http://www.hospital.uic.edu and click on Remote Application Services to find out if accessing the applications this way will work for you.

    Any other questions?

Please send a detailed email to fact@uic.edu.
