mailserv.uic.edu Email-Only Server

Mailserv is a cluster of 10 Solaris and UNIX servers. It is available to any member of the UIC community who wants an email account; it only acts as an email server. Email accounts on mailserv have higher quotas than those on tigger or icarus, which makes mailserv a very good choice for your email server. It also supports SSL encryption, which protects your password.

We have a Switch your email to mailserv utility that does it all for you -- creates your mailserv account, moves your netid@uic.edu email forwarding to mailserv, and even moves your stored email from icarus or tigger to mailserv if you want it to. And it will also take you to the Web page that you use to set up ACCC antispam filters on mailserv.

One important difference between mailserv and icarus or tigger is that you can't login to mailserv. You must use an external IMAP or POP client to read your mailserv email; if you don't have one of your own, or whenever you can't access yours, you may use the ACCC's WebMail Web-based email client to read your mailserv mail. See the ACCC Email pages for more info on how to use email at UIC, including WebMail. Or you may use pine on icarus or tigger; the Switch your email to mailserv utility will set pine up to do so.

Like all the ACCC servers and services, mailserv uses the ACCC common password. Use the ACCC Password Change Utility Web page to change your mailserv password. You can also use the ACCC email tools with mailserv to fix hung POP sessions, set up filters or vacation replies, and so on.

Even though mailserv is not a general-purpose UNIX server, a mailserv account could be the only ACCC account you need. You can use your netid and your ACCC common password to use the ACCC dialin lines and public labs, and to login to secured Web services using Bluestem. However, for programming or developing and serving personal, class, or departmental Web pages, you may also open and use an account on tigger or icarus, the ACCC's general-purpose UNIX servers.
