Academic Computing and Communications Center

The UIC Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) offers computing and communications resources and support for the instructional and research needs of the UIC campus and community. The ACCC computing division provides access to personal computers, printers, centralized UNIX workstations, on- and off-campus networking, including high-speed connections to the Internet and to several research-oriented nation-wide computer networks, and training and online documentation. Faculty, staff, and students at the university receive accounts to use for electronic mail; for personal, departmental, and class-related Web pages; and for other computer- or communications-related work. These services are furnished at no cost, although there are nominal charges for printing and for the use of site-licensed software on individual or departmental machines. The ACCC telecommunications division provides the UIC community with telephone, paging, and audio and video conferencing services on a fee-for-service basis.

For more information, see the ACCC Web page: http://www.accc.uic.edu/

The ACCC director is Dr. Ahmed S. Kassem, UIC Vice Provost and CIO. The computing division offices are in room 124, Benjamin Goldberg Research Center, 1940 West Taylor, phone (312) 413-0196 and fax (312) 996-6834; and room 2267 Science and Engineering Laboratories, 840 West Taylor. Computing Services

The ACCC computing division offers computing and computer communications facilities, support, and training, to serve the instructional and research needs of the UIC campus and community. All university faculty, staff, and students may have a personal ACCC account, which gives them electronic mail, online storage with space for a personal Web page, access to the ACCC public personal computers with full Internet connections, a login on a general-purpose workstation, and, if they need it, a login on a high-capacity compute server. (Have other questions about ACCC accounts? See the ACCC Accouts FAQ.) The ACCC provides space and support for departmental and class-related Web pages, provides and supports computer network connections for on-campus personal computers and departmental LANs, maintains the computer facilities in the UIC multimedia classrooms, and manages the UIC Provost's Faculty Computer Trade-in program, FaCT, which provides UIC faculty members with modern personal computers and replaces them on a three- or four-year cycle.

All ACCC computing and computer network resources are furnished at no cost, except for nominal charges for printing over a per-semester allotment and for the use of site-licensed software on individual or departmental machines.

The ACCC public computing facilities include:

And also the UIC-Net and Res-Net computer networks: All buildings on the UIC campus are connected to the UIC-Net campus backbone network, which connects computers and LANs at UIC to each other, to the Internet (via a 155 Mbps connection at the Ameritech Chicago NAP), and to the Internet2 Abilene and vBNS research networks. Most offices on campus and all dorm rooms have a 10 Mbps Ethernet or better connection to UIC-Net. The ACCC also has dialin telephone connections, operating at up to 56 Kbps, which allow members of campus community to access Internet from off-campus locations.

The ACCC provides and supports and full range of application software packages on its central UNIX workstations, in its public labs, and in its Novell Server Services program, which provides shared files, centralized software, and distributed printing to campus offices and in the dorms.

Information services available through the ACCC’s network include such resources as library catalogs, specialized bulletin boards, news services, announcements, staff and student phone book listings, class rosters and schedule information, and a wide variety of reference material, including the ACCC FAQs and Troubleshooting utility. The ACCC's Web servers serve the Web pages for UIC, the UIC library, and many classes, departments, and units, as well as the personal Web home pages of many members of the UIC community. ACCC-run authentication services provide access to a wide range of UIC- and University of Illinois-based online services.

The ACCC provides general consulting through its Client Services Office (CSO), consulting, support, and services for instructional technology (including the UofI-Online initiative), multimedia, and networking through its Instructional Technology Lab (ITL), training in many subjects through its free program of public seminars, and a wide range on online documentation and a search utility for it through its World Wide Web home page at: http://www.accc.uic.edu/

In addition to its wide range of free services, the computing division of the ACCC provides LAN design, installation, and management services, and personal computer maintenance on a fee-for-service basis.
