POP mail server software upgrade Monday, July 1

Jun 28 2002 - On Monday morning between 10am and noon, ACCC will install the latest version of the POP mail server for Eudora and other personal computer email programs. All three of our mail servers (icarus, tigger and mailserv) will be upgraded.

Don't know whether this applies to you? We're sending email messages to everyone who has used the POP email service on the ACCC machines with the same information that's in this news item.

If you detect problems with this upgrade please send a descriptive problem report to systems@uic.edu or call the Network Operations desk at 413-8080 and press 2.

Tigger and mailserv POP users (other than "special port 8110/9110" tigger users discussed below) should not notice the change, in theory!

Icarus POP users who also have enabled Eudora's LEAVE MAIL ON SERVER feature may notice that old messages that have already been processed are downloaded once more.

NOTE: WebMail and Eudora-IMAP users are not affected.

We'll also take this moment to remind people that WebMail and Eudora-POP do not get along well. See the link "Eudora Users: Please Read!" on the WebMail login page.

NOTICE for "Special port 8110/9110" tigger Eudora-POP users

Several years ago we set up alternative POP servers to that answered on tigger's ports 8110 and 9110 (the standard POP port is 110). The servers were, at the time, better able to co-exist with the LEAVE MAIL ON SERVER setting of Eudora. These servers will be upgraded as well on Monday. You may experience the same LEAVE MAIL ON SERVER behavior described above for Icarus users.

Also, we plan to discontinue this special 8110/9110 POP service on July 12th. We'll try to contact those who use these ports in advance and present them with the following Eudora "URL" which they can use to set the proper POP port setting.

If you or someone you know was a part of this special POP 8110/9110 service, or you are worried that you may have been involved, note that anyone can revert to the standard POP server port at any time by clicking on the URL, pressing OK and then stopping and re-starting Eudora.

Change in email quota enforcement on tigger & icarus

Jun 12 2002 - This week ACCC is introducing standard disk quotas on tigger and icarus email Inboxes. These quotas will replace the older method of truncation (snipping off and relocating the older parts of inboxes that grew too large). We are doing this both to ease management of email and to gain consistency among tigger, icarus and our mailserv system (which has used quotas for years).

Executive Summary

If your inbox storage usage grows to 70% of your quota, ACCC will send you early warning messages with your quota status and links to web pages that can assist you in reducing your usage. You should heed the warnings and take actions to delete large, old email messages from your inbox. If your inbox continues to grow unchecked, you risk having your incoming email rejected and "returned to sender" with an explanation that your account has exceeded quota.

New Web Pages

The email warnings also supply links that offer more information on email quotas in general and specific instructions for remedies, including links to Managing your icarus Email Account and Managing your tigger Email Account. (There's an equivalent Web page for mailserv: Managing your mailserv Email Account.)
