ADSM Down Until Jan 1 for Upgrade

Dec 28 2002 - The ADSM Backup server will be DOWN from Saturday December 28 until Wednesday January 1 in order to upgrade it to a much faster computer. You can neither back up nor restore files until then, either from your PC or via the dsmc command on tigger, icarus, and borg. Files already backed up will be safe and can be restored after the upgrade is complete.

Users of the automated backup scheduler on their PCs will need to restart the scheduler program after January 1, because the downtime will make it time out. The easiest way to do this is to simply reboot the whole PC.

We hope the holiday scheduling of this will minimize the inconvenience of this necessary downtime which will improve the service after it is complete.

Crime Alert

Dec 09 2002 - UIC Police report a series of crimes near campus and urge extra precaution and vigilance from the campus community.

On Dec. 3 in the late afternoon, the video store at 1516 W. Taylor was the scene of an armed robbery. No customers were inside at the time. That same day an armed offender robbed the valet parking attendant at Bar Louie, 1348 W. Taylor.

Saturday evening a UIC student was robbed at gunpoint on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of West Flournoy. The victim stated that the offenders approached from behind, displayed a chrome handgun, searched his pockets and took a cell phone. The victim was not injured.

Later Saturday, two UIC students living in the 1100 block of South Laflin were victims of a home invasion robbery by three armed offenders who forced their way into the apartment. Chicago Police think the same three men were responsible for a residential armed robbery in the 1600 block of West Ogden on Sunday.

UIC Police are assisting the Chicago Police in investigating these crimes. Anyone with information is asked to call the CPD 12th District at 746-8396. UIC Police remind everyone to travel in groups whenever possible and not to open a door to unknown persons. Make sure security doors and gates remain locked.
