Updated Crime Alert

Jan 17 2003 - At approximately 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, an employee of a contractor at UIC leaving her home in the 1400 block of West Lexington was confronted and robbed by an offender brandishing a box-cutter knife. The offender fled on foot. The victim was battered in the attack and was treated at the scene by Chicago Fire Department paramedics.

The offender is described as a male, 30's, medium build, dark complexion, wearing a green hooded sweatshirt.

On Tuesday police reported an aggravated criminal sexual assault one block south on West Flournoy. That offender was described as a male approximately 6-feet-2 inches in height, 250 to 275 pounds, pear-shaped build, 25 to 30 years of age, dark complexion, five o'clock shadow but no other facial hair, wearing a dark blue zippered coat with a hood, dark gray or black knitted cap, dark blue sweat shirt, with either a scarf or turtleneck collar about his throat.

Police do not know at this time if the two crimes are related. People are advised to travel in groups when possible; to be aware of their surroundings, particularly as they enter or leave their homes; and to be watchful for persons acting suspiciously. Anyone with information regarding either of these crimes is asked to contact Chicago Police District 12 at (312) 746-8396 or Area Four Detective Division at (312) 746-8252.

icarus update Saturday 3pm

Jan 11 2003 - Things are progressing, but going slower than expected. Right now it looks as if icarus will be up no earlier than 10pm. Sorry for any inconveniences caused.

Icarus to be down Sat. Jan 11 for system upgrade

Jan 08 2003 - Icarus, our main student email/web server, will be down for a significant period of time on Saturday January 11th so that we can install a complete hardware and OS upgrade.

Icarus will be shut down at 12:01am Saturday morning. If the upgrade goes very well, it may be back in production as early as 2pm, but complications could extend the downtime further into Saturday evening and/or night. We'll try to post updates here of any change in status.

The new hardware, a SunFire V880 from Sun Microsystems, will be twice as powerful as the current icarus (Sun E4000) and should provide significant improvements in response time.

We will also be upgrading the Solaris operating system from version 2.7 to Solaris8 (2.8). This Solaris upgrade is required to support the new hardware.

We're sorry for inconveniences caused by the upgrade, but we expect that the result (a faster and more stable system) should be worth the wait.

ADSM Upgrade Complete

Jan 01 2003 - The ADSM/Tivoli Storage Manager Server has now been converted to its new home - a much faster RS/6000 H80. It is now running in production mode, catching up with delayed backups.

You should not need to change anything to use the new server - it is still called adsm.cc.uic.edu. Files which you had backed up on the old server are available for restore on the new server - you do not need to do a new full backup. If you cannot contact it for some reason, doublecheck the TCPSERVERADDRESS line in your dsm.opt file to make sure you are not using some other name, such as a numeric IP address.

If you use the automatic backup scheduler, you will probably need to restart it, because it may have timed out during the downtime. The easiest way to do this is to simply reboot your whole computer.

If you have any trouble with this, contact datasave@uic.edu.

Thank you for your patience during the extended holiday downtime period, which allowed us to get this done right and also to have time to overcome the inevitable glitches without panic.

Happy New Year!
