Crime alert & arrest update

Feb 18 2003 - On Feb. 17 at approximately 10 p.m., a UIC student walking in the 1400 block of West Fillmore Street was grabbed from behind by an offender who placed what the offender said was a gun at the victim's neck and demanded the student's valuables. The victim swung away from the offender, who was left holding the victim's coat. The offender then fled through an apartment complex. The victim also observed a presumed accomplice watching from a distance.

The attacker was described as a male youth of dark complexion, approximately 15 years of age, 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds, wearing a gray puffy coat with red trim and a black cap with red trim. His presumed accomplice was described as a male, 15, 5-foot-7, 150 pounds, wearing a black coat, black pants and black cap.

UIC Police are assisting the Chicago Police in investigating this crime. Anyone with information is asked to call the CPD 12th District at 746-8396. UIC Police remind everyone to travel in groups whenever possible. UIC Police *DO NOT* advise resisting an armed attacker.

Separately, UIC Police are also announcing the arrest of two suspects in a string of armed robberies that was the subject of a previous crime alert in early December. They are continuing that investigation and are not yet sure how many crimes may be linked to these suspects. Initial robbery charges have been filed.

Community Alert

Feb 13 2003 - COMMUNITY ALERT

At approximately 10:30 p.m., Wed., Feb. 12, UIC Police responded to a call of a possible burglary in progress. Two UIC students were found burglarizing a laboratory in the UIC College of Medicine. The students were taken into custody by UIC Police. During the course of the investigation, the suspects directed the UIC Police to a locker in the UIC College of Pharmacy where they had previously placed a container of flammable liquid taken from another UIC laboratory.

Thursday morning at approximately 8 a.m., UIC Police, along with the Chicago Fire Deparmtment Hazardous Materials team and the Chicago Police Department Bomb and Arson unit, closed the Pharmacy building while the locker was examined and the chemical removed.

The liquid found in the locker was identified by the Chicago Fire Department as N,N-dimethylformamide, or DMF, a common organic solvent.

The building was reopened at 10 a.m. No other UIC buildings were affected and it was determined there was no further risk to staff or students.

The two male suspects are in UIC Police custody and the investigation continues. No charges have been filed yet.

UIC continues to be vigilant in ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and university community.
