You Can't Register for Fall, 2004...

Mar 29 2004 - ... without first having established your EnterpriseID and EID password.

Enterprise ID: Must be Claimed for Fall '04 Registration, Available April 5!

Next Monday, April 5, marks your first opportunity to register for Fall, 2004 classes. For the first time, you (and all students at UIC, UIUC and UIS) will be using the new UI-Integrate Student Self-Service system.

Are you ready? Have you claimed your Enterprise ID? If so, you're ready. If not, then you're running out of time to act. In order to register for classes, you must have already claimed your Enterprise ID and set a password. Go to:

http://www.uic.edu/depts/ims/webstudent/

and follow the instructions in the first bullet item - it's easy!

Note: You can then test your EID and password by clicking on the red bullet under UI-Integrate Self-Service, in the Registration category. Follow the student and UIC links to login.

Problems? Please follow the instructions in the "Help" section at the bottom of the web page. Whenever possible, first ask an ACCC lab monitor for in-person assistance, as that may be the quickest way to resolve a netid activation or EID claiming problem.

Crime Alert

Mar 26 2004 - UIC students were the victims of a home invasion armed robbery Wednesday evening.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., an unknown offender who claimed to have a gun forced a male student, who was returning home on the 800 block of south Racine, into the victim's residence. The offender asked the student if anyone else was in the house, then forced the student upstairs and kicked in the locked bedroom doors of two female students, one of whom was able to hide. The offender demanded money from the other two victims and fled.

The offender is described as a black male with dark complexion, 6-feet to 6-feet-2, possible scar on left side of face, 175 pounds, thin build, wearing black knit cap, blue jeans, white t-shirt, white gym shoes. He was seen entering a white 4-door mid-sized Ford.

Responding UIC Police and Chicago Police units could not locate the suspect in the neighborhood.

None of the victims reported injuries.

UIC Police remind members of the community of some safety tips:
--be aware of your surroundings
--try to travel in groups after dark
--use well-lit walkways
--never prop open a security door or gate
--never open your door to strangers
--on campus, look for the location of the nearest emergency call box (there are more than 700 across campus)
--the emergency number for UIC Police is 996-HELP (4357).

Tigger down Thursday Evening, 6 PM - Midnight

Mar 25 2004 - Tigger will be down THURSDAY MARCH 26, 6:00PM-12:00 Midnight to upgrade the Operating System from AIX 4 to AIX 5. This longer time window is to insure that we have complete backups before we change anything.

While tigger is down, incoming email will be held and will be delivered when the system is back up. If you still have a tigger-only password, you will be unable to use it for Bluestem authentication, such as to use the dialup lines. You can avoid this problem by setting a new Common Password now at http://passwords.accc.uic.edu . Personal Web pages hosted on tigger of the form http://www.uic.edu/~netid will be unavailable. Departmental Web pages of the form http://anything.department.uic.edu will remain available, except those that use many cgi scripts, such as formmail, pbupdate, and others, which will be unavailable.

UIC Fall 2004 Course Registration: Critical Information

Mar 24 2004 - Beginning April 5, you will be registering for Fall 2004 classes through the new UI-Integrate Student Self-Service system.

WILL YOU BE READY?

You will NOT be ready to access the system without an Enterprise ID and password, which will replace the ID number and PIN you currently use for the Student Access System and telephone registration. Neither of these systems will be in use for terms that begin after Summer 2004.

Full information on obtaining your Enterprise ID and Password are on the entry page for the Student Access System/UI-Integrate Self Service site:

http://www.uic.edu/depts/ims/webstudent/

Clicking on the link under Fall 2004 Registration Changes (Enterprise ID and Password [REQUIRED to register ]--Instructions) on this page will take you to step-by-step instructions for setting up your ID and password.

We STRONGLY advise you to set up your Enterprise ID now and to try out your access by looking at what may be available under Student Accounts Receivable and Financial Aid, just to make certain you will be good to go at registration time.

You will not want to be messing around with matters of system access at the same time you are trying to get into those sections you need. Give yourself a break and do this early!

Best wishes,

Gene W. Ruoff
Special Assistant to the Chancellor and Associate Provost UI-Integrate Campus Coordinator

ADSM upgrades not complete - Down Thursday March 4

Mar 04 2004 - We have completed one phase of the ADSM hardware upgrades, but the final step could not be coordinated, due to two different vendors each with their own schedules.

This will require the ADSM Network backup Service to be down all day Thursday March 4, from 10:00AM to 5:00PM. Once again, all previously backed up data will be safe and will be available for restore when the system is back up for its normal evening backup cycle at 5:00PM.

(Is this interfering with your ability to back up your computer? Then perhaps you should consider the automatic backup scheduler feature of the Tivoli Storage Manager software. It backs up your computer every evening without you having to remember to do anything other than leave it turned on. See http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/software/adsmnew/ for details.)

ADSM backup down Wednesday March 3, 11:30AM-1:00PM

Mar 03 2004 - The ADSM Network Backup sservice will be down Wednesday March 3 from 11:00AM to 1:00PM to complete the hardware upgrades started on Monday.

On Monday, with the system already down and disassembled on the floor, we found we were missing one vital part. I just got that part in, so now we can finish the job.

Don't Open Warning messages about your UIC.EDU email account

Mar 03 2004 - There's a new version of a slightly older virus that is sending us email messages that appear to be from official UIC.EDU sources -- staff@uic.edu, noreply@uic.edu, and the like, threatening us with cutting off our email privileges because we've sent out too many messages with viruses.

Don't either believe them or even open them -- they are viruses themselves, the latest variant of Beagle, W32.Beagle.J@mm, including the use of made-up @uic.edu addresses and the whole "Uic.edu team" fluff. If your email address were at hotmail.com, it would say it was from the hotmail administrators. Read all about it at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.beagle.j@mm.html

Currently available (March 1, 2003) Symantec anti-virus definitions will protect you against W32.Beagle.J@mm. If you haven't installed Symantec antivirus yet, do it now: Symantec AntiVirus, which is free for the entire UIC community, to use on any of their computers, on-campus or off.

mailserv backup

Mar 02 2004 - One of our servers was overloaded with processes causing problems for Mailserv, the server has been rebooted and mailserv is back up.

mailserv down Tue Mar 2 11:00 PM

Mar 02 2004 - mailserv will be down for maintenance from 11:00 PM Tue Mar 2 to 2:00 AM Wed Mar 3. Users of Webmail and Eudora who have their mailbox located on mailserv will not be able to access their mail in that interval. Mail directed to people on mailserv will be queued so none will be lost.

mailserv is down

Mar 02 2004 - We are currently experiencing problems with Mailserv. We do not have an estimate as to when it will be back up.

ADSM down during the day Monday March 1

Mar 01 2004 - The ADSM network backup service will be down for hardware upgrades all day Monday March 1, from about 10:00AM until 5:00PM. No backups or restores will be possible between that time. All previously backed up files will be safe, and will be available for restore when it is back up again. Mid-day is the quiet time for this system - it does its heavy work in the evening. We are planning to have it running again before the nightly backup cycle begins at 5:00PM. These upgrades should speed both backups and restores, and provide the capacity for the increasing number of increasingly larger computers we are backing up.
