Apr 23 2004 - A UIC student accosted in the early hours Friday by two offenders armed with a knife resisted the attackers and escaped without serious injury.

The student was confronted in the 1500 block of south Halsted by two subjects who announced a robbery and displayed a knife. The student struggled with the attackers and was struck with a fist before the offenders fled with jewelry.

The victim declined to seek medical attention. UIC Police and Chicago Police units toured the area but could not locate any suspects.

The offenders were described as black males 25-30 years old, approximately 6 feet tall and average build.

*UIC Police do NOT recommend resisting an armed assailant.*

UIC Police offer the following safety tips:
--be aware of your surroundings
--try to travel in groups after dark
--use well-lit walkways
--on campus, look for the location of the nearest emergency call box (there are more than 700 across campus)
--the emergency number for UIC Police is 996-HELP (4357).

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Chicago Police 12th District Tactical Unit at 312-746-8308 or UIC Police at 312-996-2830.

Apr 17 2004 - Tigger will be down for hardware maintenenace Saturday Morning April 17, from 10:00AM until 11:30AM to take care of some deferred hardware repairs.

While tigger is down, incoming email will be held and will be delivered when the system is back up. If you still have a tigger-only password, you will be unable to use it for Bluestem authentication, such as to use the dialup lines. You can avoid this problem by setting a new Common Password now at http://passwords.accc.uic.edu. Personal Web pages hosted on tigger of the form http://www.uic.edu/~netid will be unavailable. Departmental Web pages of the form http://anything.department.uic.edu will remain available, except those that use many cgi scripts, such as formmail, pbupdate, and others, which will be unavailable.

UICalendar problem Friday noon
 

Apr 16 2004 - We had a problem with the file server that holds the calendar database just before noon. The file server was restarted and is working again. However, we will be bringing UICalendar down at 10pm in order to run a database consitency check.

UIC students were the victims of an off-campus strong-arm robbery late Wednesday night.

Just before midnight, two students walking in the 2300 block of west Polk Street were physically forced into an alley by four unknown offenders who demanded money. Both students surrendered their wallets, and one gave up a CD player.

The offenders were described only as black males in their late teens or early 20s. UIC Police checked the area with negative results.

Neither victim sought medical attention.
