Tigger down early Wed Jul 28

Jul 28 2004 - The tigger system will be down from 1:30AM until 3:00AM early Wednesday morning July 28 for emergency file system maintenance.

tigger down tonight (again)

Jul 28 2004 - The tigger system will be down again for further repair work on corrupted file systems. It will be brought down at the completion of its backup at 10:00PM, and will probably remain down until 4:00AM.

We regret the multiple extended downtime periods for this, however we feel it is necessary since all of everyone's email inboxes on tigger are at risk until this is resolved.

Tigger down tonight 10pm-2am

Jul 21 2004 - The new AIX 5.2 operating system on tigger has been reporting instances of logical data corruption in the 100+GB storage container that holds all of the email inboxes. We hope this is the new OS doing a better job of detecting problems that went unnoticed in the old.

As a precaution, we will bring tigger down tonight at 10pm to run a tool that will check and fix any logical problems in the file system. Tigger should be back up by 2am. We regret any inconvenience caused by this outage.

Tigger operating system upgraded

Jul 17 2004 - Tigger's operating system has been upgraded to AIX version 5.2. The upgrade took much longer than we had planned and we regret any inconveniences caused. Please report any serious problems that you believe may be related to this upgrade via email to systems@uic.edu or a call to the NOC at 312-413-8080 ext 2.

Crime Alert

Jul 16 2004 - A UIC student was the victim of an off-campus armed robbery Thursday evening at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of west Cabrini Street (828 south).

An offender, armed with a semi-automatic handgun, forced the victim to the ground and removed his watch, wallet and cell
phone. A second individual apparently served as a lookout. Both fled north on Loomis. The victim was not injured.

The first offender was described as a male black in his early 20s, wearing dark pants and a dark green sweatshirt. His alleged accomplice was described as a male black with dark shorts and bright white shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to call Chicago Police Area 4 detectives at (312) 746-8253 or the UIC Police at (312) 996-2830. UIC Police will be involved with CPD in the investigation through the Joint Robbery Task Force.

***UIC Police strongly advise against resisting an armed offender who seeks only property or valuables.***

Other tips:
--be aware of your surroundings
--try to travel in groups after dark
--use well-lit walkways
--on campus, look for the location of the nearest emergency call box (there are more than 700 across campus)
