May 23 2005 - A UIC student was the victim of an armed robbery Sunday night in the 1400 block of west Lexington Ave.

Sometime after 2:10 a.m., an offender, described as a 20-year-old male black, 6 feet tall and 150 pounds, wearing a light blue sport jersey, approached the victim and brandished a black handgun. The victim gave the offender her purse containing $6 and personal items.

The offender then told the victim to get into his vehicle, which the victim refused. The offender entered a 4-door white vehicle, partial Illinois license number "624," which was occupied by three other male blacks, and fled westbound.

The victim was not injured.

Anyone with information is asked to call Chicago Police Area 4 detectives at (312) 746-8253 or the UIC Police at (312) 996-2830. UIC Police will be involved with CPD in the investigation through the Joint Robbery Task Force.

***UIC Police strongly recommend complying with an armed offender's demand for property or valuables, but resisting a demand to enter a vehicle. The victim of this crime displayed quick thinking and behaved in the safest possible manner.***

--be aware of your surroundings
--try to travel in groups after dark
--use well-lit walkways
--on campus, look for the location of the nearest emergency call box (there are more than 700 across campus)
--the emergency number for UIC Police is 996-HELP (4357).

May 21 2005 - Icarus will be down for Operating System patches on Saturday (5/21) starting at noon. Our planned downtime window is noon to 6pm, but we hope to be back up before then.

May 21 2005 - Blackboard will be down from 12:00AM Saturday 5/21 - 11:59 PM Tuesday 5/24 for systems maintenance and the blackboard content system installation. We will bring the system up sooner if possible.

May 11 2005 - The ADSM Network Backup Service will be unavailable Wednesday May 11 between 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, for several upgrades.

We are doing this during the day because that is the quietest time for ADSM, which spends all night backing up your computers, and then is idle except for an occasional restore during the day. We plan to have it up and running before the 12:00 Noon "laptop" backup time slot.

Note that the dsmc backup service on icarus and tigger will also be down during this period.

May 07 2005 - ICARUS will be taken down at 10pm tonight (Sat 5/7) for emergency file system maintenance. The work should be finished by midnight, but could last longer.
