LISTSERV severely backlogged

Mar 26 2007 - We found this morning that our LISTSERV server had not been processing properly since about 12:01am Sunday. This has resulted in a large backlog of "jobs" waiting to be processed. It may take much of the day today to clear the backlog, so any listserv mail you are expecting will likely be delivered quite late.

We found that our monitoring software (that would have alerted us to this problem early Sunday) was not properly installed the last time our LISTSERV server was rebuilt. We have reinstalled that software and are taking steps to insure that it installs properly on future rebuilds of listserv.

Telnet/FTP discontinuing Mar 15

Mar 15 2007 - Telnet and FTP will be turned off March 15 on tigger and icarus. Use ssh or sftp instead.

We have sent specific warnings to all those we believe have been using telnet or ftp. So if this affects you, you probably know. But if your spam filters have been overly agressive, and you have been using telnet or ftp, please see the Telnet/FTP WARNING in the Quick Links section on the ACCC home page.

Daylight Savings Time Problem - Arrives March 11th

Mar 09 2007 - The US Congress passed a law changing the dates that Daylight Savings Time starts and ends starting this year; it will:

  • begin on the second Sunday in March, March 11, 2007 -- three weeks earlier than before -- and
  • end on the first Sunday in November, November 4, 2007 -- one week later.

The Daylight Savings Time problem is that, during the three weeks early in the spring and one week late in the fall, the clocks on many systems that normally change to and from Daylight Savings Time automatically will continue to operate on Standard Time, even though Daylight Time is actually in effect.

In brief: Windows, MacOS, Linux, Unix, Novell, Outlook, PDAs/Smart Phones, calendaring systems (Oracle/UICalendar, Outlook, Exchange, Notes, Groupwise) and other applications may have "hour off" issues during the expanded DST periods. A link for specific UICalendar issues can be found at the bottom of the DST Info page.

We've summarized known problems and solutions at:

ACCC's DST 2007 Problem Summary Page

These web pages discuss many of the numerous computer issues associated with this change, and have instructions for fixing, patching or working around problems. We strongly recommend that you look at this the page to see how you might be affected.

If you find any unclear or incorrect information on the page, or you have information that can help us enhance it, please send email to systems@uic.edu with details.
