| (hopefully) Non-disruptive BGRC power outage Sat 7am | ||

May 09 2008 - Just an FYI... The external power to the BGRC building will be completely cut off tomorrow starting at 7am, for 2 to as many as 8 hours (see explanation below). We expect that our UPS and generator will make it a non-event for our routers and servers, just as when similar work was done at SEL last year. However, Murphy's Law always lurks, so we thought it best to let you know about it. ACCC staff will be standing by if any problems develop. The COM server room job on the second floor required some electrical work to get a large power feed to the room. As part of that job, the electricians found that a main breaker to the building was bad and ready to fail. UIC electricians are planning to replace the breaker. This will knock out power to the entire building. No one can be in the building during the outage. The formal window for the entire job is rated at 8 hours, but I suspect it won't take that long. There were similar estimates in SEL for that major breaker, and it went quickly. |

| Never send your password in an email message! | ||

May 08 2008 - We're undergoing another "phishing" attack where hackers try to convince you to send them your password. Remember, you should NEVER send your password in an email message. The hackers will then steal your webmail account and send spam from it. Today's scam attack contains text similar to this: Dear Uic Webmail User, To complete your Account Verification process, you are to reply this message and enter your password in the space provided (*******),you are required to do this before the next 48hrs of receipt of this e-mail, or your Webmail Account will be de-activated and erased from our database. Your account can also be verified at: https://webmail.uic.edu/src/login.php Thank you for using Uic Webmail Service. UIC INTERNET SUPPORT |

May 07 2008 - Print services will be suspended on Monday, 5/12/08, from 9:30am - 10am in order to perform routine maintenance on the Pharos print server. No jobs may be printed during this time. Jobs submitted prior to this time will be available once the service is restored. Print quotas for the summer term will be reset at this time. |

Apr 25 2008 - Copy your USB Microsoft Word files to the desktop and to webdisks before working on them. Save often! When done, you can save it back to the flash drive as well. There have been incidents of data loss when working directly from the USB drive. |

Apr 12 2008 - Icarus is UP. Icarus' hardware failure was isolated to one of four CPU/Memory boards, which was removed from service. Icarus has booted without it. Further downtime will be necessary to replace the module when the Field Engineer arrives with parts. |

Apr 06 2008 - Blackboard was down for maintenace Sunday 4/06 from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM. This fit into our weekly maintenace period. We fixed a minor database misconfiguration and adjusted the system clock. |
