Listserv Problems on March 21st

Mar 22 2002 - As many of you are aware there were some difficulties with Listserv yesterday, March 21st 2002.

Yesterday morning I began the process of migrating all of the Listserv lists that were housed on listserv.uic.edu to a new dedicated listserv server.

The need to this migration has been emphasized by the hardware failure on piglet (our old listserv server) on Tuesday.

I did not pre-announce this migration, as I had expected the change to be transparent to all the subscribers on all of our 2000 lists.

Here's what went wrong:

The new listserv machine, which had been running ACCC internal lists for about a month, listserv2.uic.edu insisted on sending out mail as listserv2.uic.edu. This caused several messages to be distributed with a To: address like reach-l@listserv2.uic.edu. I fixed this error at about 1pm yesterday.

Unfortunately, this fix resulted in a new problem. The SMTP slave server refused to reload properly. It took me some time to discover and work around this problem. The misbehaving SMTP server was fixed this morning, and all of the mail that had been trapped on it was delivered between 11am and noon today.

I apologize for any trouble caused by mis-filtered or delayed listserv mail.

LISTSERV server down - hardware problem

Mar 19 2002 - We are experiencing a hardware problem with the UIC LISTSERV server. This server distributes e-mail for discussion groups such as ACADEMY and REACH-L, so mail posted to such lists will be delayed until repairs are completed.

We currently have only a rough estimate of being up by 3pm. This may become clearer as repairs progress.

We regret any inconveniences caused by this outage.

LISTSERV up and running again

Mar 19 2002 - Listserv is now up and running again. There is a small chance that postings made between midnight and 4am Tuesday may have been lost during the hardware failure. We will attempt to contact anyone affected via email. But, if you posted a message to listserv@uic.edu during this time period, you may want to verify that the posting was properly delivered to recipients.
