| Klez: New worm spread by Outlook Express/IE 5.01 and 5.5 | ||
|
Apr 25 2002 - The new variant of the Klez worm has been speading very fast on the UIC campus. Please remember to keep your virus definitions up-to-date. And if you don't have Norton AntiVirus installed, install it immediately. (It's free for everyone in the UIC community.) Also, you should never open an attachment that just appears in you email that you are not expecting. It can be very tempting to click on things with an interesting filename, but it is a good way to have your machine infected. We filter incoming uic.edu email based on the subject of the message or the attachment name and this works very well for some email-borne viruses. Although we are filtering (and have been since the beginning of April) for this virus, we cannot prevent it entirely as the subject may be randomly generated and the attachment name is random.
Prevention (from the first ZDNet reference below):
For more information: Info on the virus and a removal tool can be found at: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html |

| WebMail Login Issues for IE and Netscape | ||
|
Apr 25 2002 - We have had some calls from people who are not able to access the WebMail login page using Netscape 6 and Internet Explorer version 5 or 6. We have discovered that this occurs when the security setting Use TLS 1.0 is selected. In IE 6.0 and IE 5, this setting is located under Tools->Internet Options->Advanced, and then scroll down to the Security section and uncheck Use TLS 1.0. In Netscape 6.0, the way to fix the problem to go to the Tasks menu, select Privacy and security, then Security Manager, which opens the Netscape personal security manager window. Click the Advanced tab at the top, then choose the Options tab to the left. Find the Enable TLS checkbox and uncheck it. Exit the browser and start it up again and the problem should be fixed. These are workarounds until we can figure out what we can do on the server side to eliminate this problem. |
