| New Anti-Spam Filters on Mailserv | ||
|
Aug 12 2002
- The ACCC has deployed a new anti-spam software and filters on mailserv, in an
effort to catch more spam than our previous methods have been
catching lately. For more details on how and what
we are deploying, please look at the Anti-Spam section of our help
page:
View or Edit your anti-spam filter:If you had options selected for your previous anti-spam filter, they are still in place. You may modify your options on your spam filter now as before, just visit the mailtools web page and login to change your filters, then choose to update your Anti-Spam filter. The mailtools login is athttp://www.uic.edu/htbin/accc/mailtools New foreign character set filters:The new filters specify email messages using foreign language sets as spam. If you plan on receiving legitimate email in Japanese, Korean, Thai, Chinese, or any language using Cyrillic characters, then you should visit and the "3) Foreign Language Character Sets -- Optional" section of the anti-spam filter setup page and select the languages you would like to receive.Feedback:We are working to develop these filters in such a way as to keep them useful, up-to-date, and aggressive enough to keep us from drowning in spam. Since these methods are new to UIC users, any trouble you have with these new filters or any feedback in general would be welcome. Although please do not send us copies of all your spam - we get enough ourselves! :-)Of special interest to us, especially now as we deploy this, are valid messages that are incorrectly counted as spam. More important than filtering out spam is trying NOT to filter out legitimate email. As much as we try, however, it probably can not be 100% avoided, which is why will still recommend that you check all filtered spam mail now and again. If you do find legitimate email being filtered as SPAM, forward the message to spamfiltering@uic.edu, if it is not too personal. Examining such messages will help us determine how to adjust the filters to avoid filtering out valid email as spam in the future. But please be sure to include ALL the header fields!
Thanks!
