Dec 31 2003 - Blackboard will be down for a brief period during the afternoon of Wednesday, December 31, for urgent system maintenance.

Dec 18 2003 - Thursday December 18, from 10AM to 4PM, the ADSM network backup system will be down for operating system software updates.

Though you will be unable to either back up or restore during that time, all previously backed up data will be safe and will be available for restore after the work is completed.

Dec 18 2003 - The borg machine will be decommissioned soon. On January 15, 2004, logins will no longer be permitted. FTP will be available for an additional month to permit clients to download their files. In the middle of February, the borg machine will be turned off.

Dec 11 2003 - At roughtly 2:50 P.M., until about 3:30 P.M. this afternoon, we replaced an important network switch that serves an part of the 128.248.155.0 network, effecting access to services on the Tigger, Icarus, WWW.UIC.EDU and other machines. This was an emergency maintanence. We believe the problem has be resoved. We apologize for any inconvinence this partial service outage may have caused.

Dec 10 2003 - CRIME ALERT

Police are investigating an off-campus armed robbery of a UIC student in the 700 block of South Laflin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 9.

The student told police four subjects approached and pulled him into an alley, threw him to the ground, displayed a handgun, and demanded money. The offenders took the student's wallet and bookbag, and fled southbound on Laflin in a black SUV. The student was not seriously injured.

The offenders are described as male blacks, 16-20 years of age, of slim build. Two were approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall; two were six feet.

Anyone with information is asked to call UIC Police at (312) 996-2830 or Chicago Police Area 4 detectives at (312) 746-8253. The emergency number for UIC Police is 996-HELP (4357).

UIC Police remind members of the community of some safety tips:
--be aware of your surroundings
--try to travel in pairs or groups after dark
--use well-lit walkways
--on campus, look for the location of the nearest emergency call box (there are more than 700 across campus)
