Jul 29 2005 - The ADSM Network Backup System will be down today, Friday, July 29, from about 1PM to about 4PM, for an emergency database audit process to repair database problems which have surfaced. The exact start time will depend on when the prerequisite full database backup, currently underway, completes. In any case, it is planned to have it running normally again in time for the regular daily backup cycle at 5PM.

Netnews Server - Removal of Service Notice

Jul 12 2005 - We're going to turn off our Netnews/Usenet server September 1, because usage is down and there are excellent Web alternatives. However, we're going to turn off our Clarinet news feeds effective now, because our subscription came up for renewal and the usage does not justify the price.

We've run a Usenet/Netnews server for many years. But now we have Web-based newsreaders (such as Google Groups), as well as email, Blackboard for classes, and so on. The local UIC groups are hardly used any more (and none for classes). The usefulness of having our own news server has significantly diminished.

If you, or people you know, are among the small number of current users, we're sorry for the inconvenience. But use is way down and there are good Web alternatives for essentially all the news groups stored on our server. It only makes sense we put our money and effort into more useful services.

Changes to Res-Net

Jul 01 2005 - As of today, students in the Residence Halls no longer need to sign up to be able to use a Res-Net connection. Access is automatically enabled for all UIC students and staff with a valid UIC netid and password.

Students will continue to be charged for Res-Net but the charges will come from Housing not from the ACCC.

Also, the ACCC is no longer distributing cables or switches to housing residents. Switches are being placed in the rooms that need them and will remain there. Students need to bring their own cables.
