Crime Alert

Nov 30 2006 - MESSAGE FROM THE UIC POLICE

Wednesday night at 11:30, a UIC student was the victim of a robbery on campus in the forum between the lecture halls at 805 S. Morgan. The vicitim reported two males approached, one from in front and one from behind. The facing offender, described as a black male, 5-9 to 5-11 and 160 lbs, with medium complexion, wearing a black or blue sweatshirt, implied that he had a weapon and demanded money. The offender behind the victim stuck a hard object in the victim's back. The student complied and gave the facing offender $30 and his identification. Both offenders fled on foot northbound toward Harrison.

UIC Police strongly recommend complying with an armed offender's demand for property or valuables, as the victim did in this case. Other security tips:

--be aware of your surroundings
--try to travel in groups after dark
--use well-lit walkways
--on campus, look for the location of the nearest emergency call box (there are more than 900 across campus)
--the emergency number for UIC Police is 996-HELP (4357).

The crime will be investigated by the UICPD/CPD Joint Robbery Task Force and CPD Area Four Detectives.

Anyone with information is asked to call UIC Police at (312) 996-2830.

tigger DOWN for upgrade Sun 11/12 6-8PM

Nov 09 2006 - Tigger will be DOWN Sunday November 12 from 6:00-8:00PM for a hardware upgrade. We will upgrade it from 4 CPUs to 6 CPUs to make it run faster.

ADSM down Fri 11/3 7AM-5PM

Nov 03 2006 - The ADSM Network Backup Service will be down for upgrades on Friday, November 3, from 7:00AM to 5:00PM. It will be up in time for the nightly backup cycle which starts at 5:00PM.

This is to update the TSM Server to the latest version 5.3. Among other things, we hope this upgrade will fix the problem that caused the TSM Server to crash during the nightly backup cycle last Thursday evening, causing many backups to be incomplete. (All missed backups were caught up on Friday evening.)

This lengthly downtime is necessary in order to make a full backup of the TSM Database before starting, in case someting goes wrong. This database is 205GB, and it takes a while to back it up. All previously backed-up files will be available for restore after the upgrade, even if things go badly awry and we have to restore the TSM Database from its backup.
