- A MESSAGE FROM UIC POLICE
Chicago police say two UIC students were the victims of an armed robbery that occurred last night at 850 S. Western Avenue (off campus). According to police, the students were walking in an alley when two offenders approached them, displayed handguns, and demanded money. The victims said they had no money and the offenders then forced them into a green minivan driven by a third man. The offenders demanded the victims' credit cards and PIN numbers. The victims initially refused but after the offenders threatened to kill them both, the students provided the information. The victims then were bound with tape and driven for approximately 20-30 minutes before being released in the area of 37th and Rockwell. The offenders took the victims' credit cards, checkbooks, and cell phones. One victim received minor lacerations to the mouth and was treated at the UIC Medical Center and released. The driver of the vehicle is described as an African American male, 6-1, 170 pounds. The other offenders were described as a white male in his 20s, 5-9, 150 pounds, and an African American male in his 20s, 6-2, 185 pounds.
UIC police are assisting Chicago police in the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Area Four Detective Division, Robbery/Burglary/Theft Unit at (312) 746-8253, or UIC police at (312) 996-2830. The emergency number for UIC police is (312) 996-4357 (HELP).

MAILSERV backend problem repaired
|
| |
Nov 21 2007
- We had a long day trying to fix a data storage problem on one of the 10 mailserv backend servers. As of 6:30 PM the problem was circumvented and no data was lost, though arriving messages will be late. About 10 percent of mailserv users were affected and we regret the outage. We're still trying to figure out what happened to our "failsafe" storage area network devices and follow up with the vendor to be sure we can avoid a future recurrence.

ADSM down for restores; up for backups
|
| |
Nov 19 2007
- The ADSM server is partially down due to a hardware problem with the tape library. Service has been called and will arrive Tuesday morning.
It is currently running OK for backups, but no restores can be run.
The backups scheduled for Monday night should run normally; backups are first written from your computers to disk during the night, and then are copied from disk to tape during the following day. The disk space for this had already been emptied when the problem occurred, so there is space for the Monday night backups.
When the tape library is repaired, all previously backed up data will be available for restore. However, things may be a bit backlogged on Tuesday as the Monday night backups are copied to tape much later on Tuesday than usual, once the repairs are complete.

Newer Symantec AntiVirus Can Scan SSL Email
|
| |
Nov 15 2007
- When the ACCC first required the use of SSL for email connections, we told you that email scanning by the ACCC's site-licensed Symantec AntiVirus
was not compatible with using the SSL protocol. That was true then, but it has been fixed in Version 10.1.5 and higher. You can turn it back on and set it up so that it can check your incoming POP email and outgoing email.

Pharos Popup and Mac OS X Leopard
|
| |
Nov 06 2007
- The current version of Pharos Popup for Mac does not support Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Students and staff who are planning to or have already upgraded their Mac operating system should be advised that they will not be able to print using Pharos Popup after the upgrade. Pharos is actively working on providing support for OS X 10.5, however a date is not yet available when this will be complete. We will post information about Pharos Popup for OS X 10.5 as soon as it becomes available.
