Frequently Asked Questions
What version of Centra are we running at UIC?
As of March 11, 2009 we are running Centra 7.6 SP1.
Centra supported third-party software?
- Internet Explorer 6+
- Safari 3
- Firefox 2.0.0.12
What web accessibility features does Centra have?
Saba Centra introduced the following enhancements for 508 compliance.
Support for Closed Captioning
Saba Centra supports closed captioning for transcription of the audio portion of an event in real time and in the recording
playback. It is supported for all event types: Symposium, Conference, and eMeeting. For more information about this
feature, refer to the Best Practices and Features for 508 Compliance document.
Auditable Alerts
To accomodate users with hearing imperimenmts, Saba Centra provides an ability to add sounds for supported events
(for example, when user enters a session, or raises a hand). By default, auditable alerts are not enabled. A user can enable
the alerts when he accesses the system for the first time and joins a Saba Centra session. The selected value is saved as
part of user preferences for future client launches. All sounds and associations are lost when Saba Centra client is
uninstalled. For more information about this feature, refer to the Best Practices and Features for 508 Compliance
document.
Mouseless Navigation
To make it easier for people with visual impairments to participate in events, Saba Centra provides the following
techniques that enable them to navigate through panels, windows, and buttons without a mouse:
• Navigating through the user interface using the Tab key
• Manually switching between panels in Saba Centra using shortcuts
For more information about this feature, refer to the Best Practices and Features for 508 Compliance document.
Screen Reader Support
Saba Centra enables visually impaired participants to use a screen reader to read the contents of most panels in Saba
Centra sessions, in particular:
- Participant list
- Media panel
- Text chat window
- PowerPoint slides
- Playback of recorded sessions
How fast of an internet connection do participants need in order to participate?
Users can participate in e-Rooms sessions on internet connections as low as 56kbps.
Can I also show video of myself and other participants as part of a session?
Yes, if you wish to display video to the collaboration session participants you must have a webcam, and you must specify at the time you request your session that you'd like it to be video enabled.
I would like to bring in participants that do not have a netid into a collaboration session; how would I go about this?
In order for non-UIC affiliates to participate in a conference they will need to either create an "external user" account, or login using one of the many guest accounts that we have on the server. To use one of the guest accounts the participants can login using the username:
- guest1-ext
- and the password
- guest
We have set up accounts ranging from guest1-ext through guest32-ext. Please assign a specific number to your guest users and have them adjust the guest account "display name" after logging in so they are easily identifiable.
