The ITL currently has seven networked computers, five Pentium PCs and two PowerMacs, connected to several peripheral devices, like color scanners, slide and video digitizers. All the machines have SCSI cards, Iomega Zip drives, Jaz drives, and 17" color monitors. Each computer is on its own 10 Megabit Ethernet segment with a direct connection to an ATM-attached Ethernet Switch.
The computers are configured as specialized stations, sometimes sharing peripheral equipment. They are all loaded with a good number of application software, depending on specialization. As a starting set, all the machines have installed, the Network Services Kit software and the latest versions of Microsoft Office, WordPerfect, Adobe Photoshop, Lotus Notes, FirstClass, Adobe Acrobat and Netscape Navigator Gold (configured with numerous helper apps and plug-ins).
Following is a detailed description of all of the ITL hardware, peripherals and software.
Video Station
Two high-end computers: a PC and a Mac, optimized for working with digital video and audio production.
The PC is a Micron Millenia Plus 166MHz Pentium with 128 Meg of RAM running Windows 95, for digitizing full-screen video, produce AVI, QuickTime and MPEG movies, as well as digital audio. Setup with software like: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Sigma Designs RealMagic Producer and Sound Forge. This PC has videoconferencing capabilities via Intel ProShare.
The Mac is a Macintosh 8500 150MHz with 144 Meg of RAM, for digitizing full-screen video, produce QuickTime movies and digital audio. Setup with software like: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe AfterEffects and Macromedia SoundEdit, Deck II.
Both computers share a JVC SuperVHS VCR and a Sony Trinitron NTSC video monitor.
Graphics Station #1
Two high-end computers: a PC and a Mac, optimized for working with graphics, photographs, slides, as well as hypermedia, multimedia and presentation authoring software. These computers share a high-quality color flatbed scanner, a color slide scanner (with a slide feeder) and a QuadSpeed CD-ROM recorder (to make your own CD-ROMs). The Mac also has installed the QuickTime Conferencing Kit.
The PC is a Micron Millenia Plus 200MHz Pentium Pro with 64 Meg of RAM running Windows 95. Setup with software like: Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, Macromedia Freehand and Visio Technical (for image editing and graphic illustration), and Claris HomePage, Adobe PageMill, Microsoft FrontPage, HotDog Pro, Lotus Notes,Macromedia Director, Asymetrics Multimedia Toolbook, Adobe Pagemaker, Microsoft PowerPoint and Corel Presentations (for Web, HTML , multimedia and presentation development).
The Mac is a Macintosh 8500, 150 MHz with 80 Meg or RAM. Setup with software like: Adobe Photoshop, Fractal Design Painter, and Macromedia Freehand (for image editing and graphics illustration), and Claris HomePage, Adobe PageMill, Lotus Notes, Macromedia Director , Adobe Pagemaker, Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe Persuasion (for Web, HTML, multimedia and presentation development).
Graphics Station#2
A high-end Pentium Pro PC optimized for working with graphics, optical character recognition (OCR) and hypermedia development. This PC is connected to an HP ScanJet 4c color scanner with an automatic document feeder.
The PC is a Micron Millenia Plus 200MHz Pentium Pro with 64 Meg of RAM running Windows 95. Setup with software like: Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, Claris HomePage, HotDog Pro, Caere OmniPage Pro, Lotus Notes, Corel WordPerfect Suite and Lotus SmartSuite.
General Purpose PC#1
A Micron Millenia Plus 166MHz Pentium with 64 Meg of RAM running Windows 95, configured as a general purpose PC for graphics editing, hypermedia development, and applications programming. Setup with software like: Adobe Photoshop, Visio Technical, Claris HomePage, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office, Claris FileMaker Pro, Symantec Cafe, Microsoft J++, Borland C++ and Microsoft Visual Basic Professional.
This computer is configured to serve as a demo PC for presentations given at the ITL, and it can be connected to an LCD projector for projection on a large screen. This PC has videoconferencing capabilities via Intel ProShare.
General Purpose PC #2
A Micron Millenia Plus 166MHz Pentium with 64 Meg of RAM running Windows 95, configured as a general purpose PC, similar to the aforementioned General Purpose PC #1.
Iomega Zip and Jaz drives - All ITL Computers
All ITL computers have Zip and Jaz drives to provide 100MB or 1GB removable storage options to its clients. NOTE: ITL clients should bring their own Zip and Jaz removable disk media.
Yamaha CDE100 CD-ROM Recorder - Graphics Station #1
A QuadSpeed external CD-ROM recorder that can write 650MB CD-ROMs in less than 30 minutes.
Agfa Arcus II Scanner - Graphics Station #1
A 36-bit full-color flatbed scanner for scanning graphics off paper or off transparencies. It can also be used for optical character recognition. Scanning a picture can take from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on the scanning settings.
Nikon LS-1000 Super Coolscan Slide Scanner - Graphics Station #1
A high-quality slide and negative scanner, with the option for doing batch scanning using the attachable slide feeder; up to 50 slides can be loaded. Scanning a slide can take from 40 seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on scanning settings, like resolution, color depth, etc.
HP 4C Color Scanner - Graphics Station #2
A 30-bit full-color scanner for scanning graphics or text. The scanner has a document feeder so that multiple pages can be loaded to do optical character recognition, in batch. Scanning a picture takes under a minute.
Kodak DC-50 Digital Camera
A high-end digital camera to take pictures for uploading, directly to any of the ITL PCs or Macs.
Snappy
A simple device for taking still images from video tape, camcorders or other NTSC analog video sources, at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.
JVC SuperVHS VCR - Video Station
A high-end VCR used as input source for video digitization.
Sony 13 inch Trinitron Monitor - Video Station
A high-quality NTSC video used to preview and test video production
