2. Procedures

Requesting a Board

WebBoard at UIC is currently available only to classes funded by the UofI Online initiative. If your class is going to be part of UofI Online and you wish to use WebBoard, fill in our online request form, providing the following information:

  • class rubric and number (e.g. MATH101),
  • class title (e.g. Elementary Arithmetic),
  • call number (e.g. #65432),
  • semester you are requesting the board for
  • main instructor's name and NetID,
  • names and NetIDs of other faculty or staff you would like to be board managers,
  • URL of existing class homepage, where students will be sent when hitting LOGOFF in WebBoard (if you have one, otherwise we will send them to the UIC homepage by default),

We will use an automated procedure to create the student accounts for your board by the first day of classes, but you will have to add late registrants yourself, as described in Section V: Adding Users.

Note: WebBoard associates a user with a single board. If any of your students are in its database due to another WebBoard class they took previously (or are taking concurrently), you will not be able to add this user. Please email webboard@uic.edu with the names and NetIDs of all such cases. We can add them manually to the database, so they have access to your board with their previously existing WebBoard account. Once the user has been given access, he will be notified via email to his UIC-account.

Note: Do not try to circumvent this problem by giving the student a login name other than his UIC NetID!

Access Problems

If one of your students cannot access WebBoard, even after following all the right procedures, check his user profile (see Section VI: Managing Users) and reset his password to his NetID. You can then try logging in as that student yourself, but you need to quit and re-start your browser first. If you are unable to give the student access in this manner, please email webboard@uic.edu and describe the problem, including any possible error messages. Please remind your students that they need to have cookies enabled, as well as JavaScript . AOL users with AOL software before version 4.0 cannot use AOL 's internal browser, but should use Netscape instead.

If you yourself cannot access WebBoard, first try the following steps:

  • Check the address you typed in (or the link you clicked). It must be of the general form http://webboard.uic.edu/~yourboardname , with the class name all in lower case, without spaces. If your class were MATH101 , and the board were set up for summer99 , the URL would thus be http://webboard.uic.edu/~math101su99 .
  • If this is your first time logging in to WebBoard, your password is simply your NetID. We cannot set your password to your icarus/tigger password. You can do so yourself, once you are logged in, by editing your profile .
  • Your login name must be your NetID. Previously, some login names had a number at the end, indicating the board a user belonged to. Those login names do not work anymore!
  • Make sure that your browser has cookies enabled (in Preferences) before logging in.
  • Make sure you are using a newer browser, with JavaScript enabled (and not AOL 's browser)

If this does not help, contact the UIC WebBoard administrators at webboard@uic.edu and request a check whether you had been added properly to the board.

If you try connecting to WebBoard and the browser does not prompt you to log in, nor displays the page stating that such a board does not exist, the server might be down. Call the Network Operators at (312) 413-8080 to confirm this and have it re-started. Tell them what class/board you belong to, and if you had gotten any error messages, tell them exactly what those said.

If you have questions about the use of WebBoard that this manager's guide and the accompanying user's guide do not answer, please contact the UIC WebBoard administrators at webboard@uic.edu.
