ACCC WebDisks - Sharing Files
Sharing and Permissions
User access to your folders and files can only be modified through the ACCC WebDisk web interface. Sharing your files with others is easy. Users can be added individually or as groups, and have separate permissions as specified. Sharing files with others from your ACCC WebDisk
is as easy as point and click!
To get started, log in to the system
using the web client:
From your web browser please visit:
http://webdisks.uic.edu
and login using your netid as your username and your
ACCC common password as your password.

You will be brought into the blackboard interface
where you will see the main "My UIC" tab, as well as a
series of other tabs and links. Click on the tab labeled "Content
System" in order to enter the ACCC WebDisk environment.

Use the "Modify"
link to grant others access to folders
Once logged in to the WebDisk system you will see all the folders created and files
that you have uploaded, as well as icons indicating the "share"
status. In order to share a folder click on the link labeled "Modify"
which appears in the same row as the folder that you wish to share.

In the
subsequent interface you will be presented with a series of links.

To share the folder with a user, click on the "Permissions" link.

To add individual users from within the university, click on the button labeled "Add Users". You can then search for the people you wish
to share the folder with by UIC netid.

There is a drop down box on
the right hand side of the screen that allows you to share the folder
with other subsets of users, specifically: Public, All System Accounts,
Course User List, and Course Group User List. If you are sharing files
with other users of the system then they will need to log in to
the system and search for the files that you have shared with them
by using the "Search Content" link in the tools interface.
If you have shared the folders with the public they will be able to
access your folders by using links in the format:
http://blackboard.uic.edu/bbcswebdav/users/your_uic_netid/your_folder
To find the specific URL of the content that you would like to share, simply navigate back to the "Modify Folder" screen, and click on "Properties".
From here, you can see the full URL of the content. You can copy and paste this URL into an email to share with a colleague!
Use the "Modify"
link to grant others access to files
Sharing a file is similar to sharing a folder, except the Blackboard Content System gives you many more advanced options! In order to see all of these options, click on the link labeled "Modify"
which appears in the same row as the file that you wish to share.

You will then be presented with a series of links containing options for modifying this file.
The process of sharing a file is very similar to sharing a folder. To share the file with a user, click on the "Permissions" link. To add individual users from within the university, click on the button labeled "Add Users". You can then search for the people you wish
to share the file with by UIC netid.

There is a drop down box on
the right hand side of the screen that allows you to share the file
with other subsets of users, specifically: Public, All System Accounts,
Course User List, and Course Group User List. If you are sharing files
with other users of the system then they will need to log in to
the system and search for the files that you have shared with them
by using the "Search Content" link in the tools interface.
If you have shared the files with the public they will be able to
access your files by using links in the format:
http://blackboard.uic.edu/bbcswebdav/users/your_uic_netid/your_file.ext
To find the specific URL of the content that you would like to share, simply navigate back to the "Modify File " screen, and click on "Properties". From here, you can see the full URL of the content. You can copy and paste this URL into an email to share with a colleague!
When your content is shared, a "shared" hand icon will appear in the row corresponding to the shared content.
In order to remove sharing simply click on the link
labeled "Modify" and then check off the box next to the
users whom you wish to revoke access, and then click the link labeled
"Remove".
Please note, when using the BBCS you run the
risk of sharing sensitive information with the world - be sure that
you understand the priveleges that you are granting before making
your files publicly accessible. Also, please note that sharing can
be applied to both folders and files - in order to share files that
are within "non-shared" folders you may need to adjust
the permissions on the folders they reside in.
Other BBCS Sharing Functions
The system also supports versioning, workflow tasks (such
as reviewing, approving, and grading), and the ability to email
links to files out as access passes to content that will only be
accessible for certain periods of time. All of these functions are
available to you through the web interface by using the drop down
menu in the upper right hand corner of the main BBCS interface. To learn more about these advanced options, please visit our Documentation page.
