Security change, this effects using telnet to login in to Res-net

This will only effect wired users who use telnet or FTP to authenticate to Res-Net OR use telnet to connect to UIC servers or FTP to transfer files.

Please note: On 15 March 2007, ACCC will terminate telnet and FTP service on tigger and icarus. If you wish to continue to use remote logon or file transfer services, you must use SSH (Secure SHell) or SFTP (Secure FTP) or SCP (Secure CoPy) programs instead, which provide encrypted communication. Check out the following Webpage for additional information: http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/security/telnet.html

How will this effect Res-Net? Well if you use telnet or FTP to authenticate to Res-Net to connect to the Internet, you will still be able to use that method. However, you will see something like this:

   telnet icarus.cc.uic.edu
Welcome to Res-Net. Enter your netid and password.
   Username: (your netid)
   Password:
   Happy networking!
   Connection to host lost.

The telnet session will not connect to the server, i.e. icarus.cc.uic.edu, because it no longer accepts telnet connections. But, you will be connected to the Internet. If you would like to connect via a terminal session to icarus.cc.uic.edu, you must use SSH or if you want to connect for file transfer to that server, you must use SFTP. This will apply to all UIC ACCC servers that you can connect too.

Both the SSH and SFTP clients can be obtained at the following Webpage, http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/security/telnet.html

Warning: Don't get suspended!

Putting security off until tomorrow leaves you vulnerable today. Add virus and spyware removal to your list of required reading! Install Symantec AntiVirus, run Windows Update, use Spybot. Don't wait until you're hit with an account suspension!

If you are currently suspended, please follow all the instructions on the virus and spyware removal page and then call the CSO helpdesk at 3-0003 or the Network Operations Center at 3-8080 to have your account unsuspended.

  • The ACCC had implemented a new Web-based login system starting the Spring 2006 semester. To connect to Res-Net, you accepted a certificate coming from pix.uic.edu to access the login page. You can access Res-Net after you enter your netid and password. However, an issue was discovered with the Web-based login system. The old login system (prior to Spring 2006) is in effect until this issue is remedied.

  • There has been reports of people receiving blank Web pages after logging in. It appears the pop-up blockers in assortment of Internet Explorer toolbars and external pop-up blockers are blocking the login window required for Res-Net access. A suggested solution to this problem is to disable AOL toolbar, Yahoo toolbar, Google toolbar, Norton Internet Security, and any other external pop-up blockers. All toolbar pop-up blockers and external popup blockers should be disabled or they can uninstalled through Add/Remove Programs.

  • ACCC is now offering support for Res-Net users at the free ACCCeSS Helpdesk. In addition to Res-Net support, we offer UIC-Wireless support, UNAS support, virus, adware and spyware removal along with critical Windows updates.

General information

Res-Net is the computer network access available in UIC residence halls. The Res-Net connection provides access to the internet and optionally, Server Services. Res-Net service is contingent upon acceptance and compliance with both the ACCC Acceptable Use Policy and the Res-Net usage policy. Failure to abide by these policies will result in revocation of Res-Net service and/or use of ACCC account.

Res-Net service is automatically available to you as long as you are a current UIC student or staff member residing in any of the campus residence halls and have a valid UIC netid and common password. If you require assistance activating your netid, please visit an ACCC computer lab or the Client Services Office.

If you share a room that only provides one wall jack (sometimes referred to as the bjack) for Res-Net access, the room should be equipped with a switch so that all roommates have access to a Res-Net connection for their own computer or laptop. A switch is a device that allows multiple users to share the Res-Net connection. Switches are property of Campus Housing and must not be removed from the room. Missing or damaged switches will be subject to a $100 fine per room occupant.

Charges and billing
Res-Net charges are part of the Campus Housing contract. Campus Housing charges residents $40.00 per semester for Res-Net. Please contact Campus Housing directly regarding opting-out or opting-in after cancellation of Res-Net.

Students who opt to take advantage of Server Services are billed $5.00 per month directly by ACCC (charges will appear on your University of Illinois bill).

Equipment

You can purchase ethernet and wireless cards from ACCC:

  • Desktop ethernet card: $25.00
  • Laptop ethernet card: $70.00
  • Laptop wireless card: $70.00

You should bring your own CAT-5 ethernet cable, or you can purchase one on campus from Microstation (east and west campus locations).

Service calls

Configuration, installation or troubleshooting of Res-Net related problems such as installation of ethernet cards, configuration for Res-Net and Server Services or troubleshooting will be billed at $35 per hour. These charges do not apply when service is provided at the ACCCeSS Helpdesk during the semester.

Minimum requirements

To ensure successful connectivity with the UIC network and internet, make plans to bring a computer to campus that meets the basic minimum requirements listed below.

  • A Pentium 800 MHz (or equivalent and above) PC running Win 98/Me/2000/NT/XP or a Mac running OS 8 or later, with at least 256MB RAM.

Supported brands include Dell, IBM, Compaq, Omnitech, Gateway, and Micron. ACCC is experienced in working with these machine brands; while you may use other machine brands, ACCC will not be able to provide support for them.

  • Ethernet card

Most computers and laptops are equipped with ethernet cards (ethernet ports are marked with ). If you're not sure, feel free to stop by the ACCCeSS Helpdesk. Note: We have found that D-Link and Linksys ethernet cards have had trouble connecting to our network. As stated above, we only support 3com and Intel ethernet cards.

  • Wireless card (optional)

Wireless internet access is being installed throughout all the residence halls and it is already available in many locations on east and west sides of the campus. If you would like to take advantage of this service as it becomes available in your residence hall, you can buy an 802.1x compatible wireless card or make sure that your laptop has built-in wireless support, and that it is 802.1x compliant.

  • Original operating system media

Your original operating system media - Windows 98/2000/NT/XP or Mac OS 8, OS 9, OS X DVD(s) or CD(s) - may be needed when configuring the computer. Be sure to bring these with you to campus. If your computer came with the OS pre-installed, contact the vendor to obtain the OS on CD or DVD, if needed.

Please direct questions to Client Services Office or send e-mail to resnetadmin@uic.edu.

Guest access

Res-Net is now available to guests of Campus Housing. If you are not a registered UIC student, faculty or staff member and plan to stay in the residence halls for one week or longer, you can obtain Res-Net access. The cost of Res-Net access is determined by Campus Housing. The payment will be collected by the Campus Housing. We provide service calls if you need assistance with your connection. However, if the problem is not related to our network connection, there may be a $35.00 hour service call fee applied. Please contact Campus Housing directly by phone - 312-355-6300 or e-mail housing@uic.edu. You may also contact your local Housing office:

  • If you are located in TBH or MRH, go to the MRH Housing office.
  • If you are located on the east or west side of campus, please visit the main Housing office in SRH.

You will need to complete a request form. Please indicate if your hosting department will be paying for your connection. Campus Housing will then request a UIC netid and common password to be assigned for you. This may take as few as 2 days and as many as 10 days depending on how much information you can give on the request form. A confirmation e-mail from ACCC will be sent to you (if you provide an e-mail address) and to Campus Housing. Once you receive your UIC netid and common password you'll be ready to access Res-Net.
