The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is committed to being a good network neighbor on the Internet. All computers connected to the Res-Net network are using UIC's network for access and are expected to abide by the following rules in order to continue receiving network access. The use of the network connection in the residence halls is a privilege and not a right and shall be consistent with the UIC Computer Use Policies. Failure to comply with the following policy statements will result in a minimum of the loss of your network connection. In addition, action for noncompliance may be taken with Student Judicial Affairs as well as any pertinent law enforcement agency. You are responsible for all actions performed from your computer that is connected to the Res-Net network. Granting access to others to use your computer for network access is prohibited. You are expected to take all reasonable security precautions to ensure that others do not use your computer for abusive or illegal purposes. If your computer is identified as being used for such behavior, access will be revoked. The use of your internet connection for non-University related activities including but not limited to income producing or other business activities is not allowed. You may not run servers on your Residence Hall connected computer with the intention of having other people accessing the servers. This includes, but is not limited to ftp, telnet, peer-to-peer, and mail servers as well as all others. Some servers such as HTTP, IRC, DNS and others are specifically prohibited. Use of your internet connection for the following unlawful and/or unethical activities will be considered to be a severe transgression and dealt with accordingly:
Please be aware that there is a combined 3GB upload/download data transfer limit on Res-Net network connections per 24-hour period starting at midnight of each day. As we have a limited amount of bandwidth available for Res-Net users that must be shared, we have to impose a limit to prevent abuse. If you do exceed the hard limit of 3GB, you will be sent only one warning email that applies to the entire academic year starting in Fall semester. If you once again exceed the 3GB limit during the year, your Res-Net account will be suspended for a period of time determined by the amount of upload/download data transfer. Using Res-Net means that you understand and agree to abide by the above policy statement in order to continue receiving network access. |

| Bandwidth usage monitoring | ||||||||||||||
|
ACCC uses data from the network routers to monitor bandwidth usage for all machines on campus. This is the data that all Res-Net/wireless warnings and suspensions are based on. ACCC does not include traffic on your local network, traffic to/from other UIC computers, or traffic to/from the Urbana in its bandwidth calculations. You can use the link below to view your bandwidth usage as calculated by ACCC. This is the recommended method for monitoring your bandwidth. Please note that although ACCC makes every effort to maintain the availability of its machines, the inability to access the link below is not a valid reason for exceeding your bandwidth: View my bandwidth usage (requires Bluestem login) Also please note that due to the way in which the usage data is received from the network routers, there may be a delay of as much as 15 minutes between the usage reported on the web page and your current usage. In other words, if you have downloaded or uploaded anything in the last 15 minutes, it may not be reflected in the total on the web page as that data may not have been processed yet. Finally, depending on the network protocols being used, file transfers (specifically, those using the TCP protocol) may not appear in your total until they are completed. This means that if you use a protocol like SFTP to transfer a 500MB file and it took 35 minutes to transfer, that 500MB would not be added to your total until it was done transferring. There are also many tools available online that can be installed on your machine to assist you in monitoring your bandwidth. You may or may not wish to install such tools in the event that the ACCC provided web page becomes unavailable. ACCC cannot vouch for the safety or accuracy of any of these tools, and the official bandwidth number is the one which is calculated by ACCC. A couple of web sites where such bandwidth monitoring tools can be found are:
