Server Services for Res-Net (Under Construction)

Note - To signup for Server Services on Res-Net, you must

Downloading Client Software
|
| |
Server Services uses Novell Client32 software to connect. Below
are links to downloaded the software for your operating system type. Your
computer will require approximately 50 MB of free space on your hard disk to
install all parts of this client. After installation, you may delete temporary
files and uninstall the Server Services for Res-Net Configuration Utility.
Click on the appropriate link for your operating system and then specify where
to save the file to. It is recommended to save it to the C:\ drive.
*Note: Server Services for Windows ME is not support by
the Computer Center; sign up at your own risk.
Note: as of August 2000 Server Services for Res-Net is
not yet available for Apple Macintosh computers. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Configuration Instructions
|

The install is a two step process:
- First download and install the Server Services for Res-Net Configuration
Utility, and then
- Configure your Server Services for Res-Net
|

1. Downloading and Installing the Server Services for Res-Net
|
| |
1. Open My Computer, and then double click on the C:\ drive icon (or if you downloaded the file to a different drive/directory, switch
to that drive/directory.)
|
Double click on the icon file named:
Windows 95/98
Windows NT/2000 
|
| All operating systems follow the same configuration instructions. |
2. Double clicking on the file you previously downloaded will display
a window stating what the product is and that you may need your Operating
System CD.
|

Click OK to continue.
|
3. Next you will get a windows asking to uncompress the files. Click
"Unzip" to start file decompression. Please do not change
any settings in this window at this time. They are needed "as
is" to properly interact with the other pieces of this installation.
|

Click UnZIP to start file decompression.
|
4.File decompression will take a while, so please be patient. When
this is complete, the Server Services for Res-Net Configuration Utility
will begin its installation and start copying necessary files to
run. This will most likely require you to restart your computer to
be able to use the utility. If you are prompted to restart your computer
so that system files can be updated then please do so (as shown in
figures on the right). If you are not prompted to update any files
then go to this step.

Click OK to update necessary files.

Click YES to restart your computer.
|
5. After your computer restarts and is back to the start menu (Note:
if prompted with a Novell or Microsoft Network login screen, click
"Cancel"). Then click on the
Start button on the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Select Run, and type: c:\nwtemp\ssrn\setup.exe and
click "OK".
|

Windows 95/98 users enter c:\nwtemp\ssrn\setup.exe at the Run prompt.
|
6.Next, you will be shown a prompt and ask
you to close any running programs. Click OK to
continue.
|

Click OK to
continue.
|
7. This window asks where to install the Server Services for Res-Net
Configuration Utility. The default setting will is most advisable.
Click on the button circled to continue.
|

Click on this button to continue.
|
8. The setup will now prompt you were in your start menu you would
like the link placed. Leaving at default is most advisable. Click Continue to begin Server Services for Res-Net Configuration
Utility. The copy process does not take long. It takes only a few
seconds, depending on your computer speed.
|

Click Continue to begin Server Services for Res-Net Configuration
Utility.

9. You are done with the Server Services for Res-Net Configuration
Utility. Click OK to exit the setup program.

2. Configuring Server Services for Res-Net
|

To run the Server Services for Res-Net Configuration Utility,
- Click Start.
- Select Programs.
- Select Server Services for Res-Net Configuration.
- Click Server Services for Res-Net Configuration.
5. Enter your UIC netid at the prompt. If your email address
is jsmith7@uic.edu, your netid is jsmith7.
|

Type your UIC netid and click Continue.
|
6. You will receive a confirmation screen, as shown below with your
context.
Unlike regular installations of the Novell Client, you will not have
to enter you context. This utility will make the change for you as well
as other settings.
Click on your operating system to continue with specific instructions:

Configuring Windows 95/98
|

|
The following window will appear stating that it will install/update
the Novell client. Press Continue.
At this point the Novell client software will begin copying and installing
components. It may ask for your Windows 95/98 CD. This process
will take several minutes.

Click Continue to begin the copy and installation
process.
|
| Press Yes to restart your computer. |

Click Yes to restart computer.
|
Once your computer restarts, right click on the red N
icon located in your systems tray.
- Select Novell Client Properties from the menu. The Novell Client
Configuration window is displayed.
- Select the Service Location tab.
- In the Scope List text field enter: ACCC-COMMON and click Add.
- In the Directory List Agent text field enter: loki.server.uic.edu
and click Add.
- In the Directory List Agent text field enter: odin.server.uic.edu
and click Add.
- The whole installation process is now complete.

Configuring Windows NT/2000
|

1. The following window will appear stating that
it will install/update the Novell client. Click Install/Update.
At this point the Novell client software will begin copying and installing
components. It may ask for you Windows NT/2000 CD. This process
will take several minutes.
|

Click Install/Update to continue.
|
2. Some notes on the Windows NT/2000 Novell client: the login
screen will be different. It will have the functionality of the original
Windows login screen and with ability to login to Server Services as well.
The Welcome screen will look like the picture to the right. Press Control+Alt+Delete
to bring up the login screen.

3. Enter your netid and password at the prompt. The client will attempt
to log you in to Server Services AND to your NT/2000 Workstation using
the same netid and password that you have provided.
If the netid and password provided are different for Novell and for
your Workstation, after a successful Novell login, you will be prompted
to enter the Windows NT/2000 login name and password and given the chance
to synchronize the passwords by changing the NT/2000 login account's
password to the same password as for the Server Services account.

After your computer restarts, right click on the red N
icon located in your systems tray.
- Select Novell Client Properties from the menu. The Novell Client
Configuration window is displayed.
- Select the Service Location tab.
- In the Scope List text field type: ACCC-COMMON and click Add.
- In the Directory List Agent text field type: loki.server.uic.edu
and click Add.
- In the Directory List Agent text field type: odin.server.uic.edu
and click Add.
- The whole installation process is now complete.

Configuring Windows XP
|

For installation of Windows XP, follow the Server
Services for PC Workstation.

Connection After Installation - Res-Net Authentication
|
| |
You will not have access to the network until (1) your machine has
booted up, (2) you have brought up a Web browser, and (3) you logged on to Res-Net. This
means that you will not be able to logon to the Novell servers to access Server
Services when you are prompted to do so at boot-up time (when the Novell logon
prompt appears).
Instead, follow these steps to logon to the Novell servers and access Server
Services:
- Boot-up your machine.
- When the Novell logon prompt appears, click Cancel.
- If you are using Windows NT/2000, check the box that says Workstation only and login as usual.
- Once your machine boots, bring up a Web browser and logon to Res-Net.
- Right Click on the red N in the system tray on the lower right hand corner
of your screen.
You can do the same by going through the Start menu: click on Start/Programs/Novell/Novell
Login
NOTE: You may now delete the nwtemp folder located on your C:\ drive
and uninstall the Server Services for Res-Net Configuration Utility:
- Start -> Settings -> Control Panel-> Add/Remove Programs
- Click
on Server Services for Res-Net Configuration
- Click Add/Remove
