General Questions

Question 1.1 Which jack do I plug the ethernet cable into?

  • Make sure that the ethernet cable is blue, and that it is plugged in to the black jack on the wall. The black jack is usually labeled data. It might have been painted over so you may not see that it is the black one.
  • Another way to tell is that in wall plates that are mounted sideways the right jack is for data (left is for phone). In wall plates mounted vertically it is the bottom jack.

Question 1.2 I think the jack for my Res-Net connection is not working, what should I do?

  • To verify that indeed the jack in your room is not working, you can take your machine to a friend's room that you know has a working Res-Net connection and try to plug in your machine using their jack and see if it works. If it does, then take your machine back to your room and try connecting it again (some times it is just a loose cable). If it still does not work, please report the problem to:
    • The ACCCeSS help desk, for hours and locations, please visit the Res-Net News page.
    • Send an email to resnetadmin@uic.edu (ACCC Res-Net related email address) requesting a service call.
  • If after ACCC determines that the jack is indeed not working, you will be given a form by ACCC verifying that the jack is not working. You then take this form to your Building Operations office (see below) so that they can report the problem to the Telecom Office.
    • Building Operations East: 5-6520 (Basement of SRC, room 25)
    • Building Operations West: 5-6410 (Basement of SSR, room B10)
    • Building Operations South: 5-6110 (TBH, Room 154C)

Question 1.3 I think the switch (aka hub) in my room is not working, what should I do?

  • To verify that indeed the switch in your room is not working you can try a couple of things:
    • Verify that all cables are properly and securely plugged in.
    • If you have roommate that has a computer connected to the same switch, please verify that your roommate's PC can get a connection.
If their connection through the same switch works, then try plugging in your ethernet cable in a different port on the switch.
    • If their connection is not working either, then unplug your machine's ethernet cable from the switch and plug it in directly on the network jack on the wall. Try to see if your connection now works. If it doesn't, then most likely the jack is not working. Please see the previous question on this FAQ for how to report this problem.
If plugging your connection directly on the wall works, then the switch is most likely malfunctioning or broken. To get it replaced/fixed please:
      • Visit the ACCCeSS help desk, for hours and locations, please visit the Res-Net News page.
      • Send an email to resnetadmin@uic.edu (ACCC Res-Net related email address) requesting a service call.
Please note that Housing will charge the resident or residents of the room that has had a damaged switch replaced due to user missuse or abuse.

Question 1.4 My roommate and I want to share the Res-Net connection so we can split the cost. How can we do that?

  • Housing will not split the cost of the connection between roommates.
  • It is a violation of ACCC Acceptable Use Policy to share your accounts and password. Your account will be suspended.
  • Multiple logins to Res-Net are not allowed. If you have more than one Res-Net session, both sessions will be terminated.

Question 1.5 How do I get an IP address automatically?

  • When you configure your machine, make sure that you go through the steps as outlined in the Res-Net Web page.
  • We are not assigning IP addresses, they are being automatically assigned (DHCP).
  • When you make this change in your Network connection setting as described in this page, make sure that you do it in the TCP/IP entry labeled TCP/IP your ethernet adapter's name here (depending on the operating system that you are running and other software or options you have installed, TCP/IP> may be also be listed by itself TCP/IP, or as Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)).
  • The important part is to change the entry for the TCP/IP that points to your ethernet card. You should not change the setting in those TCP/IP entries for your Dialup Adapter, AOL or any other TCP/IP entry.

Question 1.6 I receive the prompt, but it does not take my netid and password. What's wrong?

  • Do you have a UIC account and password? The email accounts are of the form jsmith7@uic.edu. In the example, jsmith7 is the netid and also the login name for the Icarus UNIX machine where most students have their email accounts.. If you do not have an account, please visit the Accounts - Get an Account Web page to create one
  • If you have an account, make sure that the password is correct by logging in to Icarus. If you don't know what your password is or the password has expired, you will not be able to login into Res-Net.
    1. If your password has expired, when you login to Icarus you will be prompted to change it. Once you do that you should be able to use your Res-Net connection.
    2. If it turns out that the problem is that you just don't remember your password, visit the Client Services Office in 2267 SEL, Mon-Fri 9am-5 (4pm on Wed) to have your password reset. You can also visit any of the labs that have a consultant on duty to have your password reset. Visit Public Labs - Hours and Locations for information on lab hours, locations and whether they have a consultant on duty or not.
    3. If you have setup a Challenge/Response question/answer, you can reset the password yourself by visiting Password Changing Utility.
    4. You do not need to signup to use Res-Net, so this is not the issue. The connection should work as long as you are current student/staff at UIC.
    5. Please contact the CSO to verify if your account is suspended. This may happen for example, if you exceeded the bandtwidth limit on your account for a 24hr period or if your machine is infected with a virus/trojan
    6. If you have verified all five items above, please visit the CSO for further assistance with this problem.

Question 1.7 How do I obtain an Ethernet card?

If your machine did not come with an ethernet card installed, you can purchase one from:

  1. The on-campus computer store, Microstation. Visit the Microstation Web site for hours and locations.
  2. From ACCC:
    • During the ACCCeSS (ACCC Connectivity Statellite Services) Helpdesk hours, see the Res-Net page for hours and locations.
    • Sending email to resnetadmin@uic.edu (ACCC Res-Net related email address) requesting one (please indicate the type of machine that you have). You will receive email letting you know when you can stop by to pick it up.
    • Ethernet cards purchased from ACCC will be charged to your UIC's student account. The charges will appear in your UIC bill. For ethernet card costs, visit Res-Net Charges/Billing.

Question 1.8 I need to get an ethernet cable. Can I get one from ACCC?

  • No, the ACCC is no longer distributing ethernet cables. You can bring your own CAT-5 ethernet cable that you can purchas from any computer store, or purchase one from the campus computer store, Microstation.Visit the Microstation Web site for hours and locations.

Question 1.9 I live in a room with other roommates, we all have computers and there is only one network jack on the wall. How can we all connect?

  • ACCC used to check out switches to residents of rooms with only one network jack and multiple computers that needed Res-Net access. However, during the summer, ACCC worked with Housing to install switches in ALL the rooms with multiple residents and only one network jack. The switch is part of the room and must not be removed. Housing will charge $100 for missing or damaged switches.
  • If you think that your room should have one, but it doesn't, please stop by the ACCCeSS Helpdesk or send an email to resnetadmin@uic.edu

Question 1.10 I had Res-Net last year, I did not cancel my connection, how do I cancel it?

  • We are changing the way that Res-Net is managed. As a consequence you no longer need to sign-up for Res-Net, nor do you need to cancel. In effect we cancelled all Res-Net signups/charges that were still active as of 6/30/05 and started with a fresh set of users.

From now on, you can access Res-Net as long as you are a student/staff at UIC and have a valid UIC netid/password. New charges will come from the Housing office as part of your Housing bill. They will stop charging you for Res-Net when you move out of the Residence Halls.

Question 1.11 I have questions about my Res-Net bill, who should I contact?

  • If you have a question about a Res-Net related bill for charges prior to 6/30/05, please call the ACCC Res-Net billing line at 312-996-9913 or send email to resnetadmin@uic.edu
  • For charges after 7/1/05, please contact the Housing department regarding your Res-Net bill.

Billing for Res-Net is now (after 7/1/05) done as part of your Housing bill. ACCC no longer bills students for Res-Net.

Question 1.12 I heard that wireless access is available in the Residence Halls? is that true? Can I use wireless as my Res-Net connection?

  • Your heard correctly, ACCC is working with Housing to make wireless available in all the Residence Hall.
  • For the status of which buildings are available, please visit the ACCC Wireless Web page.
  • Charges will be the same for wired or wireless Res-Net connections.
  • For instructions on how to set up your wireless connections please visit the ACCC Wireless Web page.

Question 1.13 I don't get prompted for my netid and password; what's wrong?

Question 1.15 I got suspended, what do I do now?

Machines in the Residence Halls have a daily network usage limit of 2GB. The first time that you exceed that daily limit you receive a warning via email. The second time you exceed the daily limit of bandwidth usage, your account is automatically suspended for 1 week (it is automatically unsuspended at the end of the week). Each subsequent suspension in the same academic year receive longer suspension periods.

You may also be suspended if your machine has been compromised and/or infected with a virus. In order to get unsuspended you must have your machine cleaned:

  • You can attempt to clean the machine yourself by downloading the CD tools that we provide on the E-Sales site. Once you have cleaned up your machine following the instructions provided on the CD, you call (312) 413-8080 to have your machine unsuspended. Please note that you will be automatically be suspended again if you did not clean your machine completely. NOTE: Since your machine is suspended, you will need to get the CD from a lab PC. Follow the instructions on this page to create the CD.
  • You can visit the ACCCeSS help desk. For hours and locations, please visit the Res-Net News page

Question 1.16 If my connection is idle for a long time, does my Internet session time out?
