UNAS-UIC Network Access Stations

Introduction
 

Do you bring a laptop to campus? When you're on campus, do you find yourself closing up your laptop and logging into a campus computer just to get on the Internet?

>UNAS-UIC (UIC Network Access Stations) provide a fast and easy way to access the Internet with your laptop.

At each of these stations, you'll be able to connect your laptop to an ethernet jack and be surfing, downloading, and checking email in no time.

 
     
Locations
 

Stations are located at the following areas:

  • Science and Engineering Laboratory (SEL), across from room 2267
  • Chicago Circle Center (CCC) 1st floor student lounge
  • Chicago Circle Center (CCC) 2nd floor Montgomery Ward lounge
  • Behavioral Sciences Building (BSB) Cafeteria
  • Daley Library research carrels (faculty only)
 
     
Hardware Requirements
 

The following is what you'll need with your laptop:

  • Ethernet card
  • Cat-5 ethernet cable*
  • Valid UIC netid and password

*Note: The ACCC does not sell nor provide ethernet cables. These can be purchased at the UIC MicroStation.

 
     
TCP/IP Requirements
 

You must also have TCP/IP installed and configured on your laptop. If your laptop is currently configured to handle TCP/IP, skip to the next section: Getting Connected.

 
     
-- Windows 95/98
 

TCP/IP installation:

  1. Select the Start button.
  2. Select settings.
  3. Double-click on Control Panel.
  4. Double-click on Network.
  5. With the Configuration tab selected, look at which network components are installed. TCP/IP should be listed pointing to your Network Interface Card (NIC). If TCP/IP is listed, skip to the next section.
  6. If TCP/IP is not shown, click on the Add button.
  7. Click on Protocol and click on the Add button.
  8. Under the Manufacturers list click on Microsoft, then click on TCP/IP.
  9. Click on the OK button. If you are prompted for your Windows files, browse to your Windows installation CD or Cab files on your computer.
  10. When TCP/IP is listed click on the OK button. You will need to restart computer when prompted.
  11. No further configuration should be necessary.

TCP/IP configuration:

To configure TCP/IP, click on the Start button in the lower left corner.

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Network.
  4. Highlight the TCP/IP protocol () by single-clicking it.
  5. Select Properties, then click the IP Address tab.
    • If you already have an IP address specified, you may use this address with the UNAS station; move onto the next section: Getting Connected.
    • If you don't have an IP address specified, select Obtain an IP address automatically as shown in the figure below. Click OK. (Important: By clicking OK, any specified IP addresses will be deleted).

TCP/IP installation:

TCP/IP is a protocol that is necessary for connectivity on the Internet. If you need to install TCP/IP, follow these steps. Be sure to have your Windows installation CD if needed.

  1. From the desktop, right-click My Network Places.
  2. Select properties.
  3. Double-click Local Are Connection.
  4. With the General tab selected, look at which network components are installed. TCP/IP should be listed pointing to your Network Interface Card (NIC). If TCP/IP is listed, skip to the next section.
  5. If TCP/IP is not shown, click on the Add button.
  6. Click on Protocol and click on the Add button.
  7. Under the Manufacturers list click on Microsoft, then click on TCP/IP.
  8. Click on the OK button. If you are prompted for your Windows files, browse to your Windows installation CD or Cab files on your computer.
  9. When TCP/IP is listed click on the OK button.
  10. No further configuration should be necessary.

TCP/IP configuration:

  2. Select properties.
  3. Double-click Local Area Connection.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) by single-clicking it.
  6. Select Properties, then click the IP Address tab.
    • If you already have an IP address specified, you may use this address with the UNAS station; move onto the next section: Getting Connected.
    • If you don't have an IP address specified, select Obtain an IP address automatically as shown in the figure below.
    • Obtain DNS server address automatically should be selected. Click OK. (Important: By clicking OK, any specified IP addresses will be deleted).

Getting Connected
 
  1. Outlets allowing access to a power supply and an ethernet jack are built into each UNAS station. If the outlet is not visible, it is simply in a closed postion. To access the outlet: locate the outlet on the desktop, grab hold of it with your thumb, and pull-up. The power supply and ethernet jack should now be accessible.
  2. With your laptop turned off:
    • Connect one end of the ethernet cable to the laptop's ethernet port.
    • Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the ethernet jack located on the outlet of the UNAS station.
  3. Turn your laptop on.
  4. After the operating system completes its boot-up, open a Web browser of your choice (Netscape, for example.)
  5. A Web page will be loaded displaying the UNAS Sign-On screen.

  6. Enter your UIC netid and password in the boxes provided. Click the Sign-On button.
  7. A page notifying you of a successful login will be displayed for a few moments. Your browser will then be directed to the UIC home page, at which point, you have full Internet access*.

    *Note : Your connection will be disconnected after 60 minutes of inactivity. If this occurs, reopen a Web browser and proceed from step 7.

 
     
Printing from the UNAS stations.
  Printing is now available at all station locations. Simply click here , follow the instructions for your operating system, download the UNAS/Res-Net Printing System client and print to any U-print station on campus.  
     
Disconnecting
 

Turn your laptop off and disconnect your Cat-5 ethernet cable from the ethernet jack of the UNAS station.
