Exchange Email Services - Outlook Web Access

Outlook Web Access

Acceptable Browser Configurations

  • Supported Browsers: Internet Explorer 5.5 and later, Firefox, Safari.
  • SSL should be enabled
  • Popups should be allowed for OWA
  • Cookies must be enabled
  • Internet Explorer 5.5 and later required for "Premium" OWA features. These features include Outlook type interface, drag-and-drop functionality, notifications & reminders
OWA Premium Mode

Using Internet Explorer, OWA resembles the interface of a standard Microsoft Outlook client. OWA is not limited to Internet Explorer, however, other browsers provide some minimal limitations in functionality. Please check Microsoft's Published articleon Outlook Web Access 2003 regarding OWA accessibility.

  1. Launch your web browser ( preferably Internet Explorer)
  2. Go to : http://exchange.uic.edu
  3. In the User Name box, type your NetId
  4. In the Password box, type in your common password. If you need to reset your password, please go to ACCC Password Changing Utility.
  5. Click on Log On or press Enter

Special Note: OWA Exchange 2003 allows for two different Client settings - Premium and Basic. If you have a web browser that supports the full feature available in the Premium client then both options will be available to you. Web browsers that do not support the premium experience will automatically be given the Basic experience. Additionally, for Security reasons OWA is set to "time-out" more quickly if you select a Public session. By default, OWA public session will log you out automatically after 15 minutes of inactivity. Therefore, it is wise to Save long messages you are composing every 5-8 minutes to tell OWA you are still active. On the other hand, you have the option to set a private computer session so the inactivity period will be 24 hours before you are logged out. Only use the Private computer option if you are using OWA on your home or office computer. If you are using OWA in a public venue and forget to log off you might run the risk of someone else accessing your account if you don't use the default option for Public or shared computer.
Firefox, Safari and other web browsers

You will connect to the Exchange server as in the Internet Explorer settings above. However, you will only have the Basic mode of viewing your email.
Accessing OWA while traveling internationally

  • There have been instances reported where individuals have not been able to access OWA from outside of the United States. This can be caused by numerous factors that are outside of our control. These include: firewalls, computer configurations, inadequate internet access.
  • Caution should be exercised when accessing the Exchange environment from unfamiliar computers (i.e. internet cafes) in other countries.
