UICast Lecture Capture

What is the UICast Lecture Capture Service?
The UICast is a lecture capture service at UIC that allows professors to record their lectures and make them available to their students electronically via a variety of formats (web, podcast, vodcast, mp3). The videos (called echoes) automatically publish to Blackboard and/or iTunesU making this service a set it and forget system. No additional work is needed by the instructor other than a simple request form sent to the appropriate admin group.

The lecture capture system (Echo360) at UIC will take in all audio and video sources that route through the classroom’s multimedia podium. This means that video from the PC, Mac, Document Camera, or the faculty’s laptop will be captured, along with audio from all of those sources. The lecture capture system will also take in any audio picked up by both the wireless microphone and the microphone built into the podium.

How does it work?
There are two different variations currently available for Echo360, capture appliance hardware and capture appliance software.
For hardware, a proprietary Echo360 capture appliance is located within the podium. This appliance captures and stores all of the video/audio information. The Echo360 capture software is installed on a Windows PC or laptop and stores the audio/video on the machine. The capture appliance/software contacts the main Echo System Server and uploads its content to the server. The Echo System Server passes the content along to the media processors which convert the raw audio/video into varying formats. The media processors pass the converted audio/video back to the Echo System Server where it is automatically published to BlackBoard or iTunesU.
