UICast Lecture Capture
Lecture Capture is a technology that allows professors to record their class sessions, and make them available electronically on systems such as Blackboard. Beginning in the Fall 2009 semester, the ACCC has added lecture capture capabilities to several classrooms.
For Administrative Access: Colleges and departments self-supporting the UICast service, and the faculty in those departments, please use this link to access the administrative portal.
The lecture capture system at UIC takes in all audio and video sources that route through the classroom’s multimedia lectern. This means that video from the PC, Mac, Document Camera, or the faculty’s laptop will be captured, along with audio from all of those sources. The lecture capture system will also take in any audio picked up by both the wireless microphone (recommended) and the microphone built into the podium.
Disclaimer: Due to frame-rate limitations and copyright considerations, the ACCC does not recommend including substantial clips of DVD/VHS playback or streaming video. Please be aware that such video will not necessarily display correctly to students playing back the lecture. Audio capture of the video will be normal, however.
The recording of the capture will then be automatically processed and made available on the Blackboard site of the class and/or on UIC’s iTunes U, depending on what is chosen when submitting the request. 1-hour lectures will be available within 4 hours. Longer lectures will be available at a rate of 4 hours of processing per hour of lecture.
- Captures posted to Blackboard appear within the Course Documents folder, and are presented as links to the student to download one or more of the formats listed below. For example:
- Captures posted to iTunesU appear within the course's College section on the main page. For example:
- iTunesU postings provide a link to 'Subscribe' to the captures, which would automatically download new UICast captures into the student's iTunes program whenever a new capture is posted, without the student having to do anything further.
Lecture capture must be scheduled ahead of time using the form linked below. Ad hoc requests for capture will be given a lower priority for processing, and so will be available 48 to 72 hours after the capture has concluded.
At this time, editing of the lecture capture is not allowed. If there is a grievous error or problem with a capture, you may contact us to request removal of the capture or cutting of some part of the capture. Please be aware that this will be a manual process, and so changes/removal may not take effect for up to five business days.
Captured lectures will be available in a number of formats:
- Standard Podcast: This is a digital audio file (MP3) with no video.
- Enhanced Podcast: This is a digital audio file that includes images synchronized with the audio (not full-motion).
The included images provide breakpoints for “chapters” within the audio file.
- Vodcast: This is a video file that contains screen visuals along with the audio from the lecture.
- Rich Media: This is a strictly web-based, rich media version of the lecture that includes presentation visuals,
audio, and video capture. This format can only be played back through the web browser and is not available for download.

Processed lecture captures will be kept on the UIC servers for a period of four semesters (including Summer).
For the Spring 2012 semester, the UICast service will be available in 37 East Campus classrooms: BH 304, BH 305, BH 308, BH 309, BH 317, BH B6, BSB 145, BSB 250, BSB 285, DH 210, DH 220, DH 230, DH 310, DH 320, DH 330, GH 205, SES 130, SES 138, SES 230, SES 250, TH 208, TH 216, and Lecture Centers A1, B1, C1, C3, C4, C6, D1, D2, D4, D5, E1, F1, F3, F4, and F6.
The request form linked below takes in semester-long requests. If you would like to add exceptions for specific dates (for example, you are showing a video, or have a midterm or final or some other test scheduled), please email uicast@uic.edu with the requested exceptions (ahead of time), and we will make sure that the capture for that date is cancelled.

Usage of the UICast Service
Usage of the UICast service is a simple process, but here are some tips that can help ensure the best quality captures.
- Always use a wireless microphone when available (check with LETS to see if one is available for the room you are using).
- If a wireless microphone is not available, be sure to stay close to the microphone at the lectern, and speak clearly into it, to ensure the best recording.
- Avoid showing long video clips, as the video will not record very well, and there are copyright concerns.
- The UICast server synchronizes its time with an ACCC server. Start speaking a minute or two late during the first recording, and see how much time, if any, there is of silence on your first capture recording, before you start talking.
