Configuring Windows NT 3.5X PPP for Use with Other ACCC Dialin Lines

Starting the PPP Setup:
|

Following are the step-by-step instructions to setup the Windows NT
Remote Access Service (RAS) TCP/IP over PPP.
It is assumed that no network is installed on the machine.
- Go to Control Panel, and double click on Network Icon.
- In the Network Settings window, make sure both "RAS" and
"TCP/IP" are listed.
In the list of Installed Network Components, make sure both
"Dial-up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" are listed, but make sure that they
are listed ONLY ONCE. If there are more than one listing for either of
these, be sure to remove one of them by clicking on the item, then
clicking on the Remove button.

Setting up the RAS (if not listed)

If the RAS is not listed:
- Click on the Add Software... button.
- Select Remote Access Service, then click on the
Add... button
- Select RAS in the Network Settings window, as was done in PPP
setup, and click on Configure.
- In the Remote Access Setup, the modem, and its COM Port, will
be displayed; make sure they are correct.
- If correct, then click on Network; otherwise, click on Configure
and select the correct modem and COM Port.

Setting up TCP/IP (if not listed)

If TCP/IP is not listed:
- Click on the Add Software... button.
- Select TCP/IP, then click on the Add... button.

Configuring TCP/IP for UIC
|
| |
- In the Network Configuration window, select only TCP/IP, then
click OK.
- Click Continue.
- The Network Settings window reappears. Make sure the
Computer Name and Workgroup are specified; if not, then
specify by clicking on Change.
- Make sure there are no Bindings checked.
- Click on Continue to finish the Network Configuration.
- Windows may ask for Windows NT 3.5x disks or CD-ROM.
- It may also ask to restart Windows NT 3.5x. This is necessary
for the changes to take effect.

Setting Your UIC Dialin Connection

- Once you are back in Windows NT 3.5x, locate the Remote Access Service Folder
in program manager, and double click on Remote Access icon.
- Click on Add button to Add Phone Book Entry.
- In the entry name, type in the name (like UIC, or whatever you want to call
it).
- In the phone number field, type the Dial-9000 number (it bounces to the
other two 666- exchange groups if all lines are in use): 312-666-9000
(56K).
- In the description, type the description of the connection (like Internet
access, etc)
- Remove the check mark from "Authenticate using current user name and password."
- Click on Advanced to view the Advanced Settings (if already in Advanced,
then it will show Basic).
- Make sure the Port is correct for your modem.
- Click on Modem, select the highest possible speed (read the footnote to
specify speeds higher than 38400 bps) and put a check mark on all three Hardware
features (Flow control, Error control, and Compression); don't put a check
mark on "Enter modem commands manually."
- Click OK to go back to Phone Book Entry.
- Click on Network and Select PPP.
- Under PPP, select TCP/IP, and click on TCP/IP settings.
- Select "Server assigned IP address."
- Select "Use specific name server addresses", and type 128.248.2.50, 128.248.7.50
and 128.248.171.50 in DNS, and DNS Backup respectively.
- Put a check mark on "Use VJ header Compression", and "Use default Gateway
on remote network."
- Click OK.
- Click OK once more on the Network Protocol Settings window.
- Click on Security.
- Select "Use clear text Terminal login only."
- In the Terminal or Script section, select "None" for before dialing, and
"Terminal" for After dialing.
- Click OK.
- Click OK one more time to finish Phone Book Entry.
- You are now ready to dial.

Connecting to UIC
|

Now you are ready to dial and connect to UIC.
- Highlight the newly created entry in the Remote Access Window,
and click on Dial.
- The Terminal screen will appear after the connection; enter
your username and password; then, at the DIALIN-#>, enter
PPP, then click on Done twice.
- Minimize the Remote Access, and you are ready to run any
Network program.
- You can also select "Minimize on Dial" from the Options pull-down
menu in Remote Access, so that you don't have to minimize it
every time.
