Using the New Style ACCC Dialin Lines with Windows 95/NT/2000/Me

Notes on the New Style Lines:

  • Note: These lines are not on campus; you must dial the complete 666 exchange, even from on campus. (The people at the 6-2001 and 6-9000 campus exchanges will be grateful if you don't bother them.)

  • These lines have a connect time limit of 5 hours.

  • These lines use a standard Windows-style connection process or the connection process used on the other ACCC dialin lines.

  • Like all ACCC dialin lines, these lines support data compression and error checking.
  • Like all ACCC dialin lines, these lines use RTS/CTS (hardware flow control).

  • You must have opened your ACCC account before you dialin. You should verify your login id and password by actually logging in from campus. If you don't yet have an account, you can create an account online.

Converting to the New Style Lines

The Dialin-2001 and Dialin-9000 are designed for use when running the new way for personal computers running Windows -- they use standard Windows dialin procedures, in addition to accepting the alternate procedure used on the older ACCC Hunt Group lines.

-- The Quick Way

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
  3. Double-click the Make a New Connection icon.
  4. Type in a name such as UIC Windows Lines.
  5. Click Next > and type in the telephone number, area code 312, phone number 666-2001.
  6. Click Next > and Finish.
  7. If you want a shortcut, drag-and-drop your new UIC Windows Lines icon to your desktop.
  8. When you click on the shortcut for the first time, type your UIC netid in all lower case in the User Name box.
  9. If your machine is in a secure location and you want to save a bit of time each time you connection, type your tigger, icarus, or mailserv password in the Password box and check Save password. If you leave the Password box blank, it ask you to enter your password each time you dialin.

After you have your new connection set up, check its setup as described in To configure your new connection in "All the Gory Details" below, to make sure the connection's dialin properties are set up correctly.

-- All the Gory Details

  1. For Windows 95, NT, 2000, or Me:
    Click Start->Programs->Accessories->Dial-Up Networking
    For Windows 98 Only:
    Click Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications->Dial-Up Networking

  2. Double-click Make New Connection
    1. For Type a New Name, enter something such as "UIC Windows Lines".
    2. If your default modem is not already highlighted, pull down the list and select it. If your modem is already working with the old method, you should not need to configure anything differently here. For more information about modems and modem support, see Modem Requirements and Settings.
    3. Click the Next > button and type in the telephone number, area code 312, phone number 666-2001.
    4. Click Next > and Finish.

  3. You will be returned to the Dial-Up Networking window.

  4. To configure your new connection:
    1. Right-click on your new UIC Windows Lines icon and select Properties from the right-click menu.
    2. In the Connect using box, click on Configure.
    3. IMPORTANT: This is what's different from the old method: Select the Options tab, and make sure that neither item in the Connection control box is checked. This is the point at which this new method is different -- you do not use a terminal window during connection. Click on OK.
    4. Click the Server Types tab.
    5. For Type of Dial-Up Server, select the one that begins with PPP... (The text following PPP is be slightly different depending on whether you're using Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, or Me.)
    6. The only boxes in that window which need to be checked for connection to UIC are those next to Enable software compression and TCP/IP. Do not check Require encrypted password. Having additional selections checked may unnecessarily slow down the connection.
    7. Click the TCP/IP Settings button. Select Server assigned IP address. Select Specify name server addresses. The ACCC domain name servers are:
      128.248.2.50 128.248.7.50 128.248.171.50
Enter any two of these for the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS. It does not matter which you choose, nor which is primary and which is secondary. (It is necessary to repeat these here because your system-wide default DNS addresses might have been changed if you also use an outside ISP with this computer.)
    8. Primary WINS and Secondary WINS should both be set to 0.0.0.0.

  5. Click OK until you are back to the Dial-Up Networking window.

  6. At this point you might want to drag the UIC Windows Lines icon to your desktop to create a shortcut to it there, for your convenience.

  7. Double-click UIC Windows Lines.
    1. Click the Dial Properties button.
    2. Make sure the Area Code you are calling from is entered properly, and that your settings for Call Waiting and such are the same as your old connection.
    3. IMPORTANT: This is different from the old method: Type your netid -- in all lower case -- in User Name box, and type your tigger, icarus, or mailserv password in the Password box. You can click Save password to save time if your machine is in a secure location. If you leave the Password box blank, it will prompt you to enter your password each time you connect.
    4. Click OK.

-- To Dialin

  1. Double-click on UIC Windows Lines.

  2. Click the Connect box. If you didn't tell it to save your password, enter your tigger, icarus, or mailserv password when it asks for it; then it will dial and connect.

  3. From then on everything is like your old method connection -- except that you have bypassed the separate window that prompted you for your netid and password with the old method.
